Eritrea: Animazione ai frati Cappuccini, Corso agli assistenti spirituali ed organizzazione del Consiglio nazionale provvisorio OFS.

L’assistente generale, Fr. Amanuel Mesgun OFMCap, che si trovava in Eritrea per le vacanze (6-31 dicembre 2011), a richiesta del provinciale Fr. Hailemikael Beraki OFMCap, è stato impegnato nell’animazione dei frati cappuccini della provincia dell’Eritrea circa l’OFS e nell’organizzare il Consiglio nazionale provvisorio dell’OFS dell’Eritrea.

La provincia cappuccina dei frati minori dell’Eritrea è la prima provincia cappuccina creata nel continente africano (gennaio 1975). Attualmente conta di 160 impegnati sia dentro che fuori della provincia (Etiopia, Sudan, Cameroun, Canada, Milano). I tre frati della provincia creati vescovi dalla Chiesa sono: Mons. Weldetensae G/Ghiorghis (Vicario apostolico di Harar, Etiopia), Mons. Mussie W/ghiorghis (Esarca di Guraghie , Etiopia) e Mons Thomas Osman (Eparca di Barentù, Eritrea).

I tre temi svolti durante l’animazione dei frati sono: “San Francesco Fondatore dei tre Ordini” ai frati della zona di Keren (15 Dicembre), “La Storia dell’Ordine secolare francescano”ai frati della zona di Asmara (26 Dicembre), e “La Nuova Identità ed Organizzazione dell’OFS” ai frati della zona di Debub (27 Dicembre). I frati partecipanti in tutti i tre giorni di aggiornamento erano circa 60.

Al corso per gli assistenti spirituali (13-14 Dicembre 2011) hanno partecipato una decina di frati, dei quali 6 sono assistenti locali, regionali e nazionale. Con gli assistenti spirituali abbiamo riveduto e studiato i testi legislativii dell’OFS (Regola, Costituzioni Generali e Rituale) tradotti nella lingua locale (Tigrino).

L’OFS nell’Eritrea che iniziò nel 1965, oggi, conta 278 membri (113 in formazione e 165 professi). La fraternità nazionale è divisa in due fraternità regionale (Keren, Asmara) e in 6 fraternità locali. Nei tre giorni di studio, l’assistente generale ha incontrato i membri dei consigli regionali e il consiglio nazionale, ha spiegato la nuova realtà dell’OFS, la sua struttura organizzativa e la “comunione reciproca e vitale” che ci deve essere tra il primo e l'ordine francescano secolare.

Tempo Forte 2011: Firenze , Convento Monte delle Croci.

La conferenza degli assistenti generali per il tempo forte si è trovata al convento OFM, Monte delle Croci, Firenze in data 20-25 Novembre 2011. Il “tempo forte” è una specie di ritiro in cui La Conferenza vive l’esperienza di stare insieme e nello stesso tempo lavora per verificare il cammino svolto durante l’anno passato e programma il calendario del prossimo anno.
In questa riunione organizzativa abbiamo avuto una accoglienza francescana dalla comunità locale. Il serio impegno della comunità nell’apostolato dell’OFS, la vita di fraternità e di preghiera veramente intensa ci ha edificato. Con piacere abbiamo partecipato agli orari della fraternità locale: preghiera e momenti di fraternità.
I questi 5 giorni della nostra permanenza in questo storico ed antico convento della provincia Toscana, oltre il lavoro di valutazione dei nostri lavori svolti nel 2011 e il lavoro organizzativo per il prossimo anno 2012, abbiamo avuto l’occasione di visitare la città di Firenze e i suoi famosi musei e centri d’arte, quali: Museo degli Uffizi, il Museo dell'Accademia, il Palazzo vecchio, la Basilica di Santa Croce, ecc...
Dopo la triste notizia della tragica morte dei tre cappuccini toscani e il giovane volontario che era con loro (22 Novembre), il giorno seguente (23 Novembre) essendo la commemorazione di tutti i defunti della famiglia francescana (I,II,III Ordine), li abbiamo ricordati nella nostra messa. Siamo andati a trovare i cappuccini ed estendere le nostre condoglianze, assicurando le nostre preghiere per i fratelli appena deceduti. La sera del 23 Novembre siamo stati invitati al convento dei Frati Minori a Fiesole.
Ricordando l’ottavo centenario della consacrazione di Santa Chiara abbiamo pregato assieme con le sorelle clarisse della comunità di San Casciano, Firenze, condiviso la cena e le nostre esperienze di frati francescani e sorelle francescane.

Nell’incontro con la fraternità locale OFS e GiFra (24 Novembre) è stato un piacere constatare che questa fraternità OFS è molto giovane. In questo incontro abbiamo avuto occasione di spiegare ai nostri fratelli secolari la nostra peculiare esperienza di fraternità inter-obbedienziale, il nostro lavoro collegiale, e la struttura nuova dell’OFS e della GiFra.

17 Novembre, Santa Elizabetta d'Ungheria,Principessa, Patrona dell'OFS

Figlia del re di Ungheria Andrea II, nacque nel 1207.

Giovanissima ando' sposa a Luigi IV di Turingia. Fedele ai doveri del suo stato, mise nello stesso tempo la sua vita a servizio dei poveri e degli ammalati, distribuendo i suoi beni e curando personalmente i lebbrosi.
Morto il suo sposo durante una crociata, fu ingiustamente cacciata dal suo castello insieme con i suoi tre figli e si ritiro' a Eisenbach, poi nel castello di Pottenstein, per scegliere in fine come dimora una modesta casa di Marburgo, in Germania, dove fece edificare a proprie spese un ospedale, riducendosi in poverta'.
Ella accetto' con fede e con fortezza la nuova condizione di poverta' e continuo' a dedicarsi all'educazione dei figli, all'assistenza dei malati e alla preghiera.
Legata ai frati minori, visse come penitente, offri tutta se stessa agli ultimi, visitando gli ammalati due volte al giorno, facendosi mendicante e attribuendosi sempre le mansioni piu umili. La sua scelta di poverta scateno' la rabbia dei cognati che arrivarono a privarla dei figli.
Mori a Marburgo il 17 Novembre 1231. E' stata canonizzata da Gregorio IX maggio 1235

VIII Giorno - Messaggio Finale

Carissimi, Il Signore vi dia Pace ! È per noi motivo di grande gioia porgervi il saluto affettuoso da parte di tutto il Capitolo Generale dell’OFS che si è riunito per la prima volta in Sud America, in San Paolo, Brasile. Da qui vi giunga l’entusiasmo e la grande energia spirituale che questo Capitolo ha comunicato a tutti e ciascuno di noi.
L’Ordine cresce! E cresce nella consapevolezza della sua identità, della sua collocazione nella Famiglia e nella Chiesa e del compito che deve fedelmente assolvere nel mondo come continuatori della missione di San Francesco. Cresce il numero delle Fraternità emergenti in ogni parte del mondo, anche e soprattutto dove la Chiesa vive in condizioni di grande difficoltà. Ancora una volta, il Capitolo vi esorta ad essere generosi e impegnati nell’accompagnamento di queste Fraternità, nelle loro necessità spirituali, di formazione e materiali.

La Gioventù Francescana si sviluppa in tutto il mondo, si rinforza e ci testimonia il suo impegno esigente di autenticità cristiana e umana. Abbiamo ricevuto grandi segni di speranza e stimoli preziosi per comprendere quanto siamo necessari gli uni agli altri. Vi preghiamo: Amate, diffondete, sostenete la GiFra! Siamo stati interpellati con forza e passione a cercare e a realizzare la nostra fondamentale vocazione cristiana, vivendola integralmente, come Francesco, nel nostro stato secolare.
La nostra missione è quella della Chiesa: Evangelizzare è la grazia e la vocazione propria della Chiesa, la sua identità più profonda (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 14). Siamo chiamati ad assolvere questa missione con coraggio, generosità e creatività. Il Santo Padre, nel suo messaggio al Capitolo, ci chiede di “affrontare con decisione le sfide dell’evangelizzazione del momento presente per essere costruttori della civiltà dell’amore”, “come testimoni e strumenti della missione redentrice della Chiesa, annunciando Cristo con la parola e l’esempio personale”. E’ una missione urgente ed esigente. Siamo stati anche interpellati con forza a riflettere sul nostro impegno a costruire un mondo più giusto e fraterno, diventando testimoni attivi e non distratti e passivi osservatori delle ingiustizie e delle grandi povertà materiali e spirituali che un mondo senza Dio ancora infligge a tanta parte dell’umanità e di tutto il creato. Non possiamo più tergiversare! La Chiesa si aspetta da noi un’azione tempestiva ed efficace. La Chiesa e il mondo hanno bisogno di Francesco e della sua Famiglia, nella quale noi siamo la parte più numerosa e più profondamente inserita in ogni piega del mondo!
C’è ancora molto da fare per creare stabili ed efficaci legami di comunicazione con tutte le Fraternità nazionali e per sviluppare completamente un senso di appartenenza che sia attento anche alle necessità materiali dell’Ordine. Occorre impegnarsi molto in questo senso. Il Capitolo ha reagito con senso di responsabilità e sensibilità a questo tema e questo è motivo di grande conforto e speranza.
Abbiamo vissuto anche momenti di grande fraternità con tanti fratelli religiosi, i nostri Assistenti spirituali e vari Ministri provinciali del Brasile e del Paraguay. Partiamo con un grande senso di riconoscenza nei loro confronti per l’affetto che hanno per noi e per la autentica comunione vitale reciproca che ormai esiste vigorosa e si rinforza con i nostri fratelli religiosi. Ci siamo sentiti sostenuti e circondati dall’affetto dei nostri fratelli di tutto il 1° Ordine e del TOR che, tramite i rispettivi Ministri Generali e numerosi Ministri Provinciali, ci hanno inviato calorosi messaggi d’incoraggiamento e unione fraterna. Dal monastero delle Clarisse della Fazenda Esperança, che abbiamo visitato per testimoniare il nostro amore per il Secondo Ordine e celebrare il ricordo di Santa Chiara, abbiamo tratto ispirazione e un sostegno affettuoso di preghiera per il Capitolo e per tutto l’Ordine. Il Capitolo ha colto questo momento privilegiato di comunione per presentare in anteprima alle sorelle Clarisse il messaggio che l’Ordine Francescano Secolare invierà a tutte le Clarisse del mondo in occasione dell’anniversario clariano. Dai fratelli e dalle sorelle di questo meraviglioso paese abbiamo ricevuto una grande e generosa ospitalità e un’accoglienza gioiosa e affettuosa da parte di migliaia di confratelli.
Tutto il Capitolo si è svolto sotto la materna protezione della Vergine Maria, Madre di Dio e Madre nostra, qui venerata come Nostra Signora Aparecida. A Lei, Protettrice e Avvocata nostra, affidiamo tutto l’Ordine perché vegli sulla realizzazione piena della nostra vocazione e della nostra missione. Chiediamo al Signore di concederci “senno e cognoscemento” per saper accogliere le Conclusioni del Capitolo Generale, con amore e determinazione per assumerle ed svilupparle coraggiosamente. VII Giorno del Capitolo

La penultima giornata capitolare, come il solito, è iniziata con al Messa presieduta da Fr. Fidenzio Vamboemel OFM, Ministro della provincia dell'Immacolata Concezione del Brasile, a nome di tutti i provinciali del Primo Ordine e Tor del Brasile. Nella sessione mattutina Ana Fruk presentò i documenti importanti della GiFra e Doug Clorey spiegò la crescita della fraternità internazionale presentando un power point sulla situazione delle fraternità emergenti. Quando Maria Aparecida e Lucio Monti presentarono la loro relazione economica, seguì una discussione animata.

La sessione pomeridiana è iniziata con i lavori dei gruppi. Dopo aver discusso il lavoro dei gruppi nella sessione plenaria, si passò alla discussione del documento "Il Nome Ufficiale dell'Ordine" presentato da Ewald Kreuser. In questa sessione non si potè approvare le conclusioni del XIII Capitolo Generale OFS.

Come conclusione di questo capitolo la fraternità nazionale del Brasile offrì una cena particolare per i capitolari. La serata di fraternità organizzata dalla stessa fraternità nazionale del Brasile continuò fino alle ore 23:00. Tutti i capitolari sono stati coinvolti nel ballo al ritmo di samba e tanti altri ritmi di cui il Brasile è molto fiero di avere.

VI Giorno del Capitolo OFS

Il VI giorno capitolare è iniziato con la Messa per la commemorazione dello "spirito di Assisi" presieduta da Fr. Amanuel Mesgun OFMCap, assistente generale, alle ore 7:00. Il 25mo anniversario dello "spirito di Assisi" è stato celebrato in questo giorno con preghiera, digiuno, pellegrinaggio e silenzio. La tavola rotonda della sessione mattutina includeva cinque diverse esperienze dei secolari nel mondo ed una relazione della commissione "presenza nel mondo". Ana Maria Olmedo SFO analizzò la situazione socio-politica del suo paese,il Guatemala. Polycarpe Jean-Lovinsky SFO ha condiviso con i capitolari l'esperienza del terremoto in Haiti e la situazione attuale dell'OFS nella stessa nazione. Claudio Fonteles SFO descrisse la situazione socio-politica del Brasile condividendo la sua esperienza come dirigente pubblico in tanti posti amministrativi dello stato. Ngendahayo Faustin parlò circa la situazione del Ruwanda dopo il genocido e il coinvolgimento della fraternità nazionale nelle attività sociali a favore dei poveri. Lovro Suisic della Croazia parlò della presenza attiva nel mondo della GiFra Nazionale e descrisse certe iniziative. La relazione presentata da Attilio Galimberti SFO riguardava le poche risposte pervenute alla presidenza al questionario della presenza attiva dell'OFS nel mondo. Nella sessione pomeridiana Tibor Krauser SFO presenta ai capitolari il documento "Ruolo del Consigliere Internazionale" per una discussione. La giornata è stata conclusa con l'ora di fraternità animata dal gruppo di Asia e Oceania.

V Giornata Capitolo OFS

I capitolari del Capitolo Generale dell’Ordine Francescano Secolare hanno iniziato la loro quinta giornata di lavoro con la celebrazione della Santa Messa presieduta dall'assistente generale e presidente di turno Fr. Amando Trujillo Cano TOR. Nella sessione mattutina, Benedetto Lino , Consigliere di Presidenza CIOFS per la lingua italiana e coordinatore di uno dei progetti formativi internazionali, ha presentato il tema “Vocazione specifica per una missione particolare”. Alla presentazione di Benedetto sono seguiti i lavori di gruppo che si sono prolungati fino alle ore del pranzo. Alla ripresa dei lavori pomeridiani, i gruppi di lavoro presentaronno i loro lavori, a cui segui un dibattito. Dopo una breve pausa Doug e Marion Clorey, una copia del Canada, hanno presentato una loro esperienza matrimoniale sul tema “Importanza della Famiglia per l’OFS” dando luogo ad un dialogo molto partecipato.
La V giornata si è conclusa con la celebrazione dei Vespri a cui è seguita una serata di fraternità animata dai rappresentanti del Continente africano.

In questo sito è possibile trovare, oltre a tutta la documentazione relativa all’Ordine, anche molto materiale formativo che può essere di interesse per molti sia francescani che simpatizzanti. IV Giorno del Capitolo OFS

Dopo la celebrazione della Eucaristia l'assemblea capitolare ha incominciato il giorno di lavoro con la approvazione, mediante votazione, della relazione del Ministro General e del tesoriere Internazionale, presentate il giorno precedente. Poi si sono poi avute le esperienze dei secolari nel mondo, presentate dai Consiglieri Internazionali OFS di Togo, Adolph Assagba e di Guinea Bissau, Nicolau Méndez . Centro della mattinata è stata la relazione di Fr Fernando Ventura, OFMCap, sul tema “Evangelizzati per evangelizzare”. Con essa egli ha esortato l’auditorio ad assumere lo spirito delle beatitudini, con una rinnovata testimonianza personale. Di portare la "rivoluzione della non violenza" di Francesco, prima che i violenti si impossesino del mondo. Nel pomeriggio si sono tenuti gruppi di lavoro su quanto da lui proposto e successivamente alla messa in comune dei lavori di gruppo, Fra Fernando Ventura ha raccolto le conclusioni dei gruppi, facendo una sintesi comune. I lavori della assemblea capitolare si sono chiusi alle 18:00 con la celebrazione dei Vespri. In serata tutti i partecipanti si sono ritrovati per un momento fraterno di condivisione e di festa animata dai fratelli e sorelle di Europa e del Nord America.

III giorno del Capitolo OFS

In the morning the assembly concentrated in revising the Report of the General Minister. Later in the afternoon several pieces of information were presented: the economic situation and the results of the demographic survey. In their work groups the priorities of the Order were addressed and studied. Before Vespers, the sharing in the plenary assembly took place. By day’s end, all the participants took part in a festive moment with the countries of South and Central America, when the linguistic diversity was no obstacle for the Fraternity. Demographic data of the SFO in the world: At the moment the Secular Franciscan Order is present in 66 countries in the world in established Fraternities. In the other 42 countries the Fraternities are emerging and in 3 nations this process is in the initial phase. As for the Franciscan Youth (YouFra) it is present in 66 countries, with 35 established Fraternities and 31 emergent. The report presented to the capitulary assembly noted that various countries have commissions that are carrying out programs to promote and support Franciscan vocations with very encouraging results. In particular in Eastern Europe there is a strong number of brothers and sisters between twenty and thirty-five years old. There are also places where the presence of married couples involved in the life of the SFO is increasing. Overall it is estimated that worldwide there are about 350,000 Secular Franciscan brothers and sisters.

XIII Capitolo Generale OFS: II giorno

In numerosi autobus, secondo i gruppi linguistici, intrapresero la strada per il Santuario di Nostra Signora di Aparecida. Lì sono stati accolti da un grand numero di circa 2000 francescani secolari e membri della GiFra - Gioventù Francescana - con canti e parole di benvenuti. Don Caetano Ferrari, Vescovo di Bauru, ha presieduto l'Eucaristia accompagnato da più di venti sacerdoti. Il santuario era pieno di francescani del primo, secondo e terzo ordine, che sono arrivati da molte città del Brasile. Da questo santuario mariano, il più famoso del Brasile, i Capitolari sono andati a Guaratinguetá Seminario Francescano dedicato al primo santo del Brasile: il francescano Frei Galvao. Sono stati accolti calorosamente dalla comunità francescana OFM che invitò i capitolari a pranzo. Sao Galvão è stato canonizzato da Benedetto XVI nel 11 Maggio 2007. Successivamente, la destinazione dei capitolari fu la "Fazenda Esperança" = la "Fabbrica della Speranza": un istituzione che recupera i tossico dipendenti. In questo luogo i capitolari incontrarono anche le clarisse, per commemorare l'ottavo centenario della consacrazione di Santa Chiara. Pregarono assieme e consumarono il pane che è stato loro offerto dai capitolari come segno di "comunione vitale e reciproca". Alle ore 7:00 i capitolari ritornarono nella loro sede di capitolo, al Centro Pastorale Santa Fè.

CAPITOLO GENERALE OFS (INTERMEDIO): 22-29 OTTOBRE

NOTIZIE DEL GIORNO 22 OTTOBRE 2011 - SABATO
Gradualmente, nel corso degli ultimi giorni sono arrivati al "Centro Pastoral Santa Fé", sede del Capitolo Generale dell'Ordine Francescano Secolare, sorelle e fratelli da più di sessanta paesi dei cinque continenti. La sera del sabato, il 22, l'incontro ha iniziato con l'Eucaristia, presieduta da Odilo Pedro Scherer, Cardinale Arcivescovo di São Paulo, Brasile. Nella sua omelia, il Cardinale ha esortato i francescani secolari di ritrovare il senso della missione, seguendo come esempio San Francesco d'Assisi, il cui entusiasmo è necessario imitare. Al termine della celebrazione sono state le canzoni e l'animazione dei brasiliani che tra la musica e le palme, hanno invitato i presenti a condividere un “agape” fraterno.
Il giorno si è concluso, l'atto di apertura del Capitolo Generale. In esso, il Consigliere Internazionale e Ministro Nazionale del paese ospitante, Antonio da Silva Bittencourt, ha detto qualche parole di benvenuto a tutti i presenti. Poi, Fra Amando Trujillo, TOR, nel nome della Conferenza degli Assistenti Generali, ha espresso la sua gioia per l'inizio di questo incontro. Poi, la Ministra Generale, Encarnación del Pozo, ha parlato ai presenti,
ricordando con emozione, i consiglieri internazionali, che recentemente sono tornati alla Casa del Padre. Ha ricordato anche, all'ex Segretaria Generale, Emanuela De Nunzio, la quale, in una conversazione in questi giorni ha inviato a tutti i presenti, un caro ricordo e vicinanza nelle preghiere. Encarnación, ha fatto anche riferimento alla gioia che significa cominciare questo incontro fraterno. La fraternità si presenta come una sfida a vivere questi giorni, quindi da lì è possibile prendere il tema di questo Capitolo: "Evangelizzati per evangelizzare". Alludendo all'importanza che questo tema ha per la Chiesa in questo momento, ha concluso, dichiarando aperto il XIII Capitolo Generale dell'Ordine Francescano Secolare.
Dopo le parole di apertura, la Ministra ha letto il messaggio che il Papa Benedetto XVI ha rivolto ai partecipanti del Capitolo ed a tutta l'OFS. La cerimonia di apertura è conclusa con la present azione del capitolari, il gruppo di assistenza che accompagna nel corso del incontro e i membri del attuale Consiglio della Presidenza della CIOFS.

Preparativi per Capitolo Generale OFS

Le Costituzioni generali dell'OFS, dopo aver ricordato che il Consiglio internazionale in Capitolo generale è il massimo organo di governo del l'Ordine Secolare Francescano, continuano: "il Consiglio internazionale si riunisce ogni sei anni in capitolo elettivo, e almeno una volta tra i due capitoli generali elettivi, secondo le norme stabilite dalle Costituzioni e dallo Statuto internazionale". L'ultimo capitolo generale elettivo dell'OFS è stato celebrato nel Novembre del 2008, perciò nel 2011 era previso un capitolo generale intermedio. L'anno scorso la Ministra generale dell'OFS, Encarnation del Pozo, nella solennità del Corpus Christi, annunziò che la celebrazione del XIII Capitolo generale dell'Ordine Francescano Secolare si svolgerà in Brasile nel 2011 e che il tema generale sarà "Evangelizzati per evangelizzare". Fin dal Giugno 2010 ci sono stati dei preparativi sia dalla presidenza CIOFS che dalle fraternità internazionali.

Il lavoro del prossimo capitolo includerà tre relazioni (Relazione della Ministra generale, relazione economica, e la relazione della CAS) e nove presentazioni (Il tema centrale e i sotto temi, indagine demografica, importanza della famiglia per l'OFS, il ruolo del Consigliere internazionale, la GiFra, le fraternità emergenti, il bilancio preventivo, i criteri di contribuzioni per il prossimo triennio, l'OFS in Cina).

Questo Capitolo generale sarà preceduto dalla seconda riunione annuale della Presidenza CIOFS.

Incontro Internazionale GiFra a Madrid

Quattro giorni antecedenti la GMG 2011 di Madrid, nella stessa capitale della Spagna (al Collegio Santa Rita) ci fu l’incontro internazionale della GiFra (Gioventù Francescana). In questo incontro internazionale della GiFra hanno partecipato 350 Gifrini da 40 paesi del mondo. In questo incontro particolare della GiFra ci sono stati presentazioni culturali di tutti i paesi rappresentati. I Gifrini ha avuto occasione di conoscersi, fraternizzare, e pregare assieme. La Ministra generale, Encarnation del Pozo, e la Presidente internazionale della GiFra, Ana Fruk, hanno spiegato ai partecipanti il motivo di questo incontro e l’identità della GiFra internazionale. In questi quattro giorni di fraternità internazionale i giovani hanno anche pregato assieme alle suore di clausura di Alacalà e visitato i luoghi storici.

Durante la GMG i Gifrini si sono associati ai più di un milioni di giovani che sono venuti alla Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù. Il Villaggio Francescano, inaugurato il giorno 16 Agosto, fu il punto di riferimento della Famiglia Francescana per i 5 giorni della GMG. Tante sono state le attività della Famiglia Francescana durante la GMG (preghiere e adorazioni, concerti e teatri, presentazioni, conferenze ed esposizioni). Le più importanti sono: l’incontro dei sei Ministri generali della Famiglia Francescana con i giovani nella Basilica di San Francisco el Grande, dove i Ministri hanno fatto la catechesi a 2000 giovani e il Festival dell’Allegria Francescana, dove hanno partecipato Fr. “Mago Magoni” e Br. Stand Fortuna.

Nella GMG 2011 di Madrid hanno partecipato 800 vescovi, 14 mila sacerdoti e più di un milione di giovani che venivano da 193 nazioni e 4700 giornalisti accreditati da tutto il mondo. La GMG 2011 di Madrid è stata un successo, perche ben preparata, molto partecipata e pacifica. La Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù (GMG), l’evento più importante del cattolicesimo, nacque nel 1984 su iniziativa di Papa Giovanni Paolo II. Le edizioni precedenti di questo evento sono: Buenos Aires (Argentina) 1987, Santiago de Compostela (Spagna) 1989, Czestochowa (Polonia) 1991, Denver (Sati Uniti) 1993, Manila (Filippine) 1995, Parigi (Francia) 1997, Roma (Italia) 2000, Toronto (Canada) 2002, Colonia (Germania) 2005, Sydney (Australia) 2008, Madrid (Spagna) 2011. La prossima Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù (GMG) sarà a Rio de Janiero (Brasile) nel 2013.

Angola, Capitolo: 24-26 giugno

LUANDA, Angola Il secondo capitolo elettivo della fraternità nazionale dell’Angola è stato celebrato a Luanda, nella parrocchia di Sant’Antonio dei Cappuccini, dove l’OFS ha una sede propria. La fraternità nazionale dell’OFS in Angola è stata costituita tre anni fa. In questi tre anni la fraternità nazionale ha fatto progressi rilevanti. La fraternità nazionale è composta di 836 membri, dei quali 434 professi. La fraternità nazionale è divisa in 14 fraternità locali erette canonicamente, 5 fraternità locali emergenti, e 5 nuclei in formazione. Maria Aparecida Crepaldi, delegata della Ministra Generale, Encarnation Del Pozo e Fr. Amanuel Mesgun OFMCap, delegato della CAS Generale, hanno partecipato al secondo capitolo elettivo OFS di Angola. Dopo l’accoglimento ai capitolari, il capitolo è iniziato con una conferenza di Mons Joaquim Ferreira Lopes OFMCap. Mons. Joaquim, prima di essere consacrato vescovo era uno dei promotori del terzo ordine secolare in Angola. Alla conferenza di Mons Joaquim è seguita l’intervento di Maria Aparecida Grepaldi circa il tema del futuro capitolo generale dell’OFS in Brazile: “Evangelizzati per Evangelizzare”. La relazione triennale del ministro nazionale uscente, Domingos Antonio da Silva, che era dettagliata e precisa, includeva sia quella della formazione come quella economica. L’assistente nazionale, Fr. Tomas Ginga OFMCap, nella sua relazione che è seguita a quella del ministro nazionale, precisava che l’assistenza spirituale all’OFS e alla GiFra è guidata dai cappuccini e dai minori. Il giorno prima dell’elezione sono stati presentati i candidati e si è discusso tanto sulla qualità dei candidati e la natura degli uffici del consiglio nazionale. Il giorno 25 Giugno alle ore 15:00 sono stati eletti: Domingos Antonio da Silva, rieletto come ministro nazionale; Nkanu Kiala, rieletto come vice-ministro nazionale; Domingo Calussumi, rieletto come segretario; Matondo K. Domongos, rieletto come tesoriere, Paulo Kosengue, come maestro della formazione, Afonso Kizedioko, come animatore della GiFra. Il ministro nazionale e il vice-ministro sono anche rispettivamente: consigliere internazionale e sostituto. L’assistente generale, Fr. Amanuel Mesgun, ha avuto un incontro con li assistenti spirituali nazionali e regionali. Il nuovo consiglio nazionale è stato confermato da Maria Aparecida Crepaldi nella solenne messa parrocchiale del 26 Agosto, presieduta dall’assistente nazionale. Domenica 26 giugno, tutti i capitolari hanno fatto un pellegrinaggio al grande ed antico santuario mariano della Mama Muxima (Cuore immacolato di Maria). Il giorno dopo (27 Giugno), per testimoniare la comunione vitale e reciproca della grande famiglia francescana, il nuovo consiglio nazionale ha avuto un incontro con le sorelle clarisse di Luanda. Dopo la visita alle sorelle clarisse, la comunità dei frati minori di Luanda hanno invitato il nuovo consiglio per una agape fraterna. Alle ore pomeridiane dello stesso giorno, il nuovo consiglio nazionale, sempre accompagnati dalla delegata della ministra generale OFS e il rappresentante della CAS Generale, visitarono l’arcidiocesi di Luanda per testimoniare la loro comunione con la Chiesa. Non potendo incontrare l’arcivescovo di Luanda, Mons. Damiào Antònio Franklin, perche malato, il gruppo incontrò il vescovo ausiliare della arcidiocesi di Luanda, Mons. Anastàcio Kahango OFMCap.

Paesi Bassi, Capitolo: 17-19 giugno

DENEKAMP, Olanda - Il capitolo elettivo dell’Olanda è stato celebrato il 17-19 Giugno 2011. Dalle 12 fraternità locali canonicamente erette sono venuti al capitolo 11 delegati e tutto il consiglio nazionale composto da 5 secolari. Dagli tre assistenti spirituali, due erano presenti. Fr. Fons Sijben OFMCon (assistente spirituale nazionale) non ha potuto partecipare al capitolo perche era malato. Ewald Kreuzer ha presieduto il capitolo, come delegato della Ministra Generale Encarnation Del Pozo. Fr. Amanuel Mesgun, come rappresentante della CAS generale era presente al capitolo. Il tema del capitolo era “l’OFS nel Mondo”. Il primo giorno del capitolo è stato dedicato alla presentazione della relazione del Ministro Nazionale uscente: Michel Versteegh. La discussione sul compito svolto dal Consiglio uscente e sulla relazione del ministro nazionale è stata guidata da Fr. Fer Van Reijken OFM. Dopo aver approvato la relazione triennale del Ministro Nazionale uscente, sono seguite le raccomandazioni al nuovo Consiglio Nazionale che sarebbe eletto. Nel secondo giorno del capitolo ci son state le elezioni. Nella giornata delle elezioni due ministri provinciali del primo ordine erano presenti. Prima delle elezioni, i due ospiti: Ewald Kreuzer e Fr. Amanuel Mesgun hanno parlato ai capitolari circa l’aspetto internazionale dell’OFS e l’assistenza collegiale a livello internazionale. Una volta accertato che tutti i votanti di diritto erano presenti, meno uno, e saputo che la maggioranza assoluta è di 8, invece quella maggioranza dei 2/3 è 10, è incominciata la votazione. Sono stati eletti: Michel Vesteegh (rieletto), ministro nazionale e vice-consigliere internazionale; Leo Koot, vice-ministro nazionale; Mariette Fleur (rieletta per la terza volta), segretaria e consigliera internazionale; Theo Reuling (rieletto) maestro della formazione e tesoriere.I secolari dei Paesi Bassi che contano circa 200 membri, sono divisi in 12 fraternità locali. I secolari di questa fraternità nazionale sono assistiti collegialmente dagli assistenti spirituali del primo ordine francescano.

V Congresso dell’OFS anglofono dell’Africa

LUSAKA, Zambia Nel V Congresso Africano anglofono dell’OFS hanno partecipato un centinaio di secolari (6 assistenti spirituali e 99 secolari) da 10 paesi africani (South Africa, Malawi, Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mozambico, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Zambia). Nella prima giornata dopo la messa verspertina dello Spirito Santo, il ministro nazionale dell’OFS dello Zambia, Honorius Chilifiya e Lucy Almiranez, hanno dato il benvenuto ai partecipanti che si sono presentati uno ad uno.
Il giorno dopo, la messa celebrate nella Cattedrale del Bambin Gesu’ di Lusaka e’ stata dedicata alla commemorazione del decimo anniversario della approvazione delle Costituzione Generali dell’OFS. La messa animate dalla fraternita’ OFS nazionale era lunga, ma con tamburi, danze e canti locali elettricizzanti. Nella prima giornata di lavoro tutte le fraternita’ partecipanti hanno dato una relazione ciascuno, descrivendo la situazione attuale delle loro rispettive fraternita’. I due giorni successive sono stati dedicati alla formazione che comprendeva: “Professione nell’OFS”, “La Comunita’ Internazionale OFS” e il “Progetto Africa” di Doug Clorey, “Senso di Appartenenza” di Lucy Almiranez, “Nuova Assistenza per il Nuovo OFS” di Fr. Martin Bitzer e “Testi legislative dell’OFS” di Fr. Amanuel Mesgun ed infine “Poverta’ ed autosufficienza” di Br. Honorius Chilufiya. Tutte le relazioni sono state accompagnate da discussioni e lavori in gruppo.
Dopo una Domenica dedicata al tour del Victoria Falls and Kariba Dam (5/06/2011), i partecipanti si sono trovati per un ultima giornata in aula per la valutazione e la conclusione del Congresso. I due assistenti generali hanno presieduto le due messe di apertura e della conclusione del Congresso.

Animazione dell’EACC (= East Africa Capuchins Conference)

Nella prima riunione annuale dell’EACC, Fr. Amanuel Mesgun, Assistente Generale dell’OFS presentando la relazione “Il Ruolo dei Superiori Maggiori nel Nuovo Statuto per l’Assistenza Spirituale dell’OFS e della GiFra” ha animato la Conferenza dei Cappuccini dell’Africa dell’Est. Dopo la relazione dell’assistente generale i superiori maggiori hanno spiegato la situazione dell’OFS delle loro rispettive circoscrizioni e l’assistenza spirituale e pastorale prestata da loro. Poi si è discusso e scambiato delle idee circa la nuova natura ed identità dell’OFS secondo i nuovi testi legislativi. In questo raduno annuale una ventina hanno partecipato. Il definitore dell’Africa, Br. Agapit Mroso, ha presieduto tale raduno.
Dopo l’intervento di Fr. Amanuel Mesgun è seguita la relazione di Fr. Helmut Rakowski il direttore dell’Animazione missionaria dalla Curia Generale dei Cappuccini. I Superiori maggiori dei Cappuccini dell’Africa del Est formano una conferenza chiamata EACC ((= East Africa Capuchins Conference). La conferenza dell’EACC è composta da tre province (la Provincia di San Francesco in Eritrea, la Provincia dello Tanzania e la Provincia del Madagascar), 5 Vice-provincie (Zambia, Sud-Africa, Kenya, Mozambico ed Etiopia), 3 custodie (Zimbabwe, Uganda e Malawi). C’è anche un presenza dei cappuccini in Sudan e Namibia.

Seconda Riunione del Clero OFS delle Filippine

La fraternità dei preti secolari membri dell’OFS delle Filippine conta: 1 cardinale 9 vescovi e 86 preti diocesani. In questa seconda riunione del clero diocesano OFS hanno partecipato una trentina di preti dalle differenti diocesi delle Filippine e due vescovi: Mons. Leo Tumulak, DD, ordinario militare e Mons. Rey Evangelista, DD. I due ospiti, Br. Doug Clorey e Fr. Amanuel Mesgun OFMCap. hanno condiviso le loro idee con le loro rispettive relazioni: “Priorità del Capitolo Generale dell’OFS” e “Familiarizzazione con i documenti dell’OFS”. Il conventuale Fr. Alphonsus Panaligan e la clarissa Madre Encarnacion J. Reyes, OSC e Presidente della Federazione OSC nelle Filippine hanno presentato pure le loro relazioni di: “Il Clero Diocesano, Portatore del Dono del Vangelo” e “L’Attualità della Spiritualità di Santa Chiara dopo 800 anni di fondazione”.

Il 5 Maggio durante la messa celebrata nel convento delle Clarisse, Mons. Leo Tumulak, DD e 4 preti diocesani hanno emmesso la loro professione nelle mani della nuova Ministra Nazionale OFS: Lanuza Yvonne . I sacerdoti diocesani OFS delle Filippine non hanno una fraternità personale, ma sono membri delle diverse fraternità locali sparse in tutta le Filippine. Dopo aver esteso il programma annuale, la riunione si concluse con una gita culturale presso le antiche chiese francescane di Laguna.

Capitolo elettivo delle Filippine

CEBU CITY, Filippine - Doug Clorey, OFS, Vice-Ministro generale, come delegato della Ministra Generale e Fr. Amanuel Mesgun Temelso, OFM Cap, Assistente generale dell'OFS, hanno presieduto il X Capitolo elettivo dell’OFS delle Filippine 28 Aprile - 1 Maggio 2011. Prima delle elezioni ci sono state delle sessioni di formazione e i relatori erano: Mons. Angel Lagdameo OFS, i due ospiti dalla Presidenza CIOFS e la Madre Encarnacion J. Reyes, OSC, Presidente della Federazione OSC nelle Filippine. Il giorno dopo, il Ministro Nazionale, il tesoriere e il formatore hanno presentato le loro relazioni triennali. Dopo aver discusso le relazioni presentate, i capitolari hanno sviluppato gli orientamenti e le priorità che la Fraternità nazionale porterà avanti nei prossimi tre anni.

Sabato, 30 Aprile, sono stati eletti: Ministro nazionale: Lanuza Yvonne. Nazionale Vice-Ministro: Tayao Arnaldo. Formatore Nazionale: Hernandez Luzviminda. Segretario Nazionale: Manongtong Hilario. Tesoriere Nazionale: Grace Jose Garlene. Consigliere nazionale-1: Roa Te Jo. Consigliere nazionale-2: Maghirang Antonio. Consigliere Internazionale: Ministro nazionale, Lanuza Yvonne. International Consigliera Supplente: National Vice-Ministro, Arnaldo Tayao.
La celebrazione di installazione di ufficiali nazionali è stata condotta nella mattinata di Domenica durante la messa di chiusura. Dopo la celebrazione del Capitolo ci sono state presentazioni culturali da parte dei partecipanti, ed infine un tour della città di Cebu e Bohol Island.

La Fraternità Nazionale delle Filippine è costituito da oltre 1700 attivi, membri professi, organizzati in 122 Fraternità locali e venti (20) Fraternità regionali. La Gioventù Francescana è presente nelle Filippine, con 1500 membri in 73 gruppi attivi. I tre rami del Primo Ordine (OFM, OFM Cap, e OFM Conv) e del Terzo Ordine Regolare (TOR) sono impegnati nella assistenza spirituale all'OFS. La CAS Nazionale è guidata da P. Armand Obal, OFM.

Capitolo elettivo in Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela - Il Capitolo elettivo del’OFS del Venezuela fu celebrato nella casa di ritiro “Madre Emilia” a Montealban, Caracas, il 7-10 Aprile 2011. In questo capitolo , tra ministri locali, delegati e osservatori hanno partecipato più di 50 fratelli e sorelle. I capitolari con diritto di voto erano 46.
Il capitolo è stato presieduto da Idahar Escalante, come delegata della Ministra Generale con la partecipazione di Fr. Amanuel Mesgun Temelso OFMCap, Assistente Generale. I due primi giorni del capitolo sono stati dedicati alla valutazione del “Piano strategico” del 2008-2011, come pure alla programmazione per il triennio 2011-2014. Il “Piano Strategico” quello passato e futuro, come pure la relazione del tesoriere è stato presentato con precisione e competenza dal Ministro Nazionale, Alejandro Albornos. La Domenica è stata dedicata alle elezioni. Sono stati eletti: Amparo Gonzàlez come Ministra Nazionale, Raùl Guzmàn come Vice-Ministro, Alejandro Albornos come Consigliere Internazionale e la stessa Ministra, Amparo Gonzàlez, come Sostituto Consigliere Internazionale. L’OFS del Venezuela è stato fondato alla fine del XVIII secolo dai primissimi missionari spagnoli.
L'OFS venezuelano molto attivo nel sociale e nelle attivita' parrocchiali ha una sede propria nel centro di Caracas. Attualmente la fraternità nazionale conta di circa 620 membri, divisi in 26 fraternità locali. La NiFra (Araldini) e la AdoFra (Adoloscenti francescani) conta circa 112 membri, invece la JuFra è composta di 158 giovani. L’OFS e la GiFra sono assistiti da 19 assistenti locali e due assistenti nazionali. La CAS nazionale e' composta dai tre famiglie del Primo Ordine Francescano

Animazione CECOC

KREMICKE' BANE, Slovacchia Al centro di Europa la CECOC (Conferentia Europae Centro Orientalis Capuccinorum) si è riunita il 16-17 Marzo 2011, per una discussione e valutazione dell’OFS nei paesi Slavi. E’ la prima animazione all’interno dell’Ordine che si è fatta da quando ho intrapreso il mio ufficio. La riunione della conferenza CECOC a Kremnickè Bane era presieduta dal Definitore Generale Fr. Jure Sarcevic.

Nel blog dell’assistente Generale leggiamo: “Ognuno dei quattro Assistenti ha un importante lavoro da svolgere nell'ambito del suo Ordine. Fr. Amanuel Mesgun Temelso ha il compito specifico di aiutare i frati cappuccini a "manifestare ai membri dell'Ordine Secolare un senso veramente fraterno, alimentare con l'esempio la fedeltà alla vita evangelica e promuovere efficacemente l'Ordine sia presso il clero secolare che presso i laici" (Cost 95,4). L'assistenza spirituale all'OFS non è un apostolato da affidare ad esperti ma è parte della vita della fraternità evangelica vissuta insieme con i secolari. Da qui l'insistenza sulla necessità di formazione di tutti i frati affinché prendano consapevolezza dell'OFS, e non solo per gli assistenti spirituali e per i frati in formazione iniziale”. Un volta che l’Assistente Generale ha introdotto il tema del “altius Moderamen” dei Superiori Maggiori nelle loro rispettive circoscrizioni, tutti i membri della Conferenza CECOC ha spiegato i loro programmi, i progressi e i problemi di ciascuna circoscrizione. Dopo aver compreso la situazione dell’animazione dell’OFS nelle diverse circoscrizioni, ci siamo soffermati, secondo il programma, nelle “Domanda da ponderare e rispondere, discussioni da fare, idee da condividere”. Tutte le circoscrizioni sono impegnate nell’assistenza pastorale e pastorale dell’OFS.

La CECOC è una conferenza che, vissuta clandestinamente durante il periodo del comunismo, dopo il crollo del comunismo nell’Est europeo, sta facendo progressi qualitativi e quantitativi. La CECOC comprende: 6 province (Cracovia e Varsavia, Croazia, Slovacchia, Repubblica Ceca, Slovenia), 2 vice-province (Bielorussia e Ucraina). 3 custodie (Romania, Bulgaria e Svezia) e 6 presenze (Albania, Ungheria, Russia, Lituania, Lettonia , Islanda)

La “comunione reciproca e vitale” tra l’OFS e la famiglia francescana del Primo e Terzo Ordine Regolare è messa in pratica tramite l’assistenza spirituale. Leggiamo nelle Costituzioni Generali dell’OFS: “Come parte integrante della Famiglia Francescana e chiamato a vivere il carisma di Francesco nella dimensione secolare, l'OFS ha particolari, stretti rapporti con il Primo Ordine e con il TOR”.

Il programma annuale del 2011 della CAS Generale (Conferenza degli Assistenti Spirituali) include: partecipare a 14 capitoli (Perù, Bielorussia, Colombia, Venezuela Filippine, Lituania, Bosnia e Erzigovina, Romania, Cile, Paesi Bassi, Angola, Hong Kong-Macao, Indonesia, Guatemala, ), effettuare 6 Visite Fraterne e Pastorali (India, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Brasile, Francia, Mozambico, ), dare 5 corsi di formazione sia per gli assistenti spirituali come pure per i membri dell’OFS (Argentina, Messico, Italia (Assisi), Italia (Roma) per gli Africani, Taiwan, Paraguay).

Il Congresso dell’Africa di lingua inglese che si terrà a Lusaka (Zambia) il 1-7 Giugno sarà una buona occasione per incominciare a lavorare per il “progetto Africa”. Si spera che sia un congresso dove si raccoglieranno precise statistiche circa le fraternità costituite e le fraternità emergenti dell’Africa. Si svilupperà una strategia per la formazione e riordinazione dell’OFS in Africa, ecc...

Oltre i soliti due raduni della Presidenza CIOFS che si terranno, la prima a Roma il 22-29 Maggio, la seconda in Brasile il 15-20 Ottobre; la CAS Generale è impegnata nella preparazione dell’incontro internazionale della GiFra, che si terrà a Madrid il 12-15 di Agosto, durante la Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù (16-21 Agosto). Il più importante evento annuale dell’OFS sarà il Capitolo Generale non elettivo che sarà celebrato a Sao Paolo in Brasile il 22-29 Ottobre p.v.

Un’altra cosa molto importante che noi, quattro assistenti spirituali, ci proponiamo di fare in quest’anno è l’animazione nei nostri rispettivi ordini. Quest’anno nel nostro ordine cappuccino c’è il programma di animare le nostre conferenze: CECOC (16-17 Marzo in Slovacchia), EACC (9-13 Maggio in Zambia) e il CIMCAP in una data da accordarsi nel futuro.

INDIA : Visita Fraterna e Pastorale

Il mio primo compito dell'anno 2011 fu' la visita fraterna e pastorale in India. La visita fraterna e pastorale dell'India fu' chiesta dalla presidenza CIOFS, subito dopo il capitolo nazionale elettivo dell'India fatto a Maggio del 2010.

Nelle Costituzioni Generali dell'OFS leggiamo: "Lo scopo della visita, sia fraterna che pastorale, e' quello di ravvivare lo spirito evangelico e francescano, assicurare la fedelta' al carisma e alla Regola, offrire aiuto alla vita di fraternita', rinsaldare il vincolo dell'unita' dell'Ordine e promuovere il suo piu' efficace inserimento nella Famiglia Francescana e nella Chiesa" (GGCC 92,1).
La visita fraterna e pastorale dell'India e' stata condotta da Doug Clorey (vice Ministro Generale OFS) e da me il 7-17 Gennaio 2010. Come e' raccomandato nelle Costituzione Generali dell'OFS, in questi 10 giorni di intenso lavoro abbiamo dedicato particolare attenzione ai programmi, metodi ed esperienze formative, alla vita liturgica ed alle attivita' apostoliche dell'OFS in India. Nella visita abbiamo incontrato autorita' ecclesiali, ministri provinciali, assistenti nazionale, provinciali e regionali. Abbiamo partecipato ad un raduno del Consiglio Nazionale e a tante riunioni dei Consigli regionali. Abbiamo dialogato con i membri del Consiglio Nazionale e con centinaia di francescani secolari. Abbiamo preso visione dei registri e degli atti della fraternita' sia nazionale e di alcune fraternita' regionali.

La fraternita' nazionale dell'OFS in India anche se ha dei minori problemi e' un fraternita' dinamica e vibrante con un futuro molto promettente. l'OFS in India composto di 900 fraternita' locali divise in 80 fraternita' regionali e' assistito da solo 27 frati francescani del Primo e Terzo Ordine Regolare. I francescani secolari dell'India sono 23,150. Di questi 2,975 sono secolari non professi, e 2,525 candidati all'OFS.

Assistenza Spirituale OFS; A.D. 2010

E’ già un anno e tre mesi che sono in via Cairoli 43, Roma, per svolgere il mio compito di Assistente Generale OFS. L’esperienza di un anno è molto bella. La collegialità con gli altri miei compagni di lavoro mi ha aiutato molto. Sono riconoscente per la loro pazienza nei miei riguardi e il loro serio impegno nei nostri incontri mensili e nei nostri lavori fatti sempre con una francescana fraternità.

Attualmente la CAS Generale (Conferenza degli Assistenti Spirituali) è formata da: Fr. Martin Bitzer OFMConv (presidente di turno), Fr. Amando Trujillo TOR (segretario), Fr. Ivan Matic OFM e Fr. Amanuel Mesgun OFMCap.

In quest’anno il primo raduno annuale della Presidenza del CIOFS ebbe luogo al Collegio Internazionale San Lorenzo da Brindisi, Roma, dal 10 fino al 17 Aprile 2010. Il secondo raduno annuale ebbe luogo a Palermo il 16-23 Ottobre 2010. In questo secondo raduno si è lanciato il “progetto Africa” che sarà eseguito entro il 2014, prima del Capitolo Generale Elettivo dell'OFS.

Durante quest'anno ci sono state: 6 visite fraterne e pastorali, 27 presenze nei capitoli elettivi, 2 congressi e/o assemblee. L’assistente generale OFMCap ha partecipato a 7 capitoli, 2 visite pastorale e 1 congresso.

Quasi in totalità dei lavori della presidenza sono eseguiti dalle Commissioni e sono valutati in ogni raduno della Presidenza CIFOS. L’assistente generale OFMCap, assieme alla Ministra Generale OFS, è il coordinatore dei 5 progetti della formazione.

Quest’anno abbiamo avuto 1 corso di formazione a livello regionale o continentale (The Asia, Oceania Congress). Per il tempo forte, quest’anno, eravamo ospiti dei frati Cappuccini della Provincia di Sant’Angelo e San Pio, a San Giovanni Rotondo dal 20 al 25 di Novembre.

Gli articoli di fondo della nostra rivista “Koinonia” per quest’anno erano le conclusioni del XII Capitolo Generale dell’OFS e della Gifra: Formazione (II trimestre), presenza nel mondo (III trimestre), gioventù francescana, comunicazione (IV trimestre) e l’assistenza spirituale alle comunità costituite ed emergenti (I Trimestre).

Nel prossimo anno (2011) ci proponiamo di animare più intensamente i frati dei nostri ordini con degli interventi nei raduni delle Conferenze dei Superiori Maggiori e i soliti incontri con i Nuovi Ministri. L'anno 2011 ci aspetta con 12 capitoli nazionali, 1 capitolo Generale, 6 visite fraterne e pastorale, 7 congressi (corsi di formazione, assemblee) e i due soliti raduni annuali della Presidenza del CIOFS.

VISITA FRATERNA E PASTORALE NAFRA, 2010

La fraternita’ nazionale del Nord America durante il suo convegno annuale del 2010 (Ottobre 26-31 Scottsdale, Arizona, USA ) ha invitato la Presidenza CIOFS per una visita fraternal e pastorale. Tibor Kauser (delegato del Ministro Generale) e Fr. Amanuel Mesgun OFMCap (rappresentatnte della CAS) hanno partecipato al convegno e condotto la visita fraternal e pastorale. Il tema del Convegno annual del NAFRA era: “Bringing the Gift of Gospel Living to Life – Our credible witnessing” = “Rivitaliazzare il dono della vita evangelica: la nostra testimonianza credibile”. Il tema esposto sopra e’ la visione del Consiglio Nazionale, eletto l’anno scorso, che deve implementare in questi tre anni, dando priorita’ alla fraternita’, formazione, comunicazione e GiFra.

I sei giorni di intenso lavoro ebbero inizio con la celebrazione della Messa presieduta dal vescovo ausiliare di Phoenix, Mons. Eduardo Nevares. Vita fraterna, preghiera e formazione sono i tre elementi che hanno avuto piu' importanza durante la riunione. I lavori includevano : relazioni (Ministro Nazionale, tesoriere, assistenza spirituale, formazione, ed altri commissioni nazionali OFS), testimonianze ( Ministri regionali, FAN (Franciscan Action Network), FI (Franciscan Internationa), FMS (Franciscan Mission Service), FFA (Franciscan Family Apostolate), OEF e TSSF), formazione (l’appartenenza all’OFS).

La fraternita’ nazionale degli Stati Uniti d’America e’composta di 14,500 membri, divisi in 688 fraternita’ locali. Ci sono solo 506 assistenti spirituali che cercano di soddidfare l’assistenza nazionale di 688 fraternita’ locali, 43 fraternita’ emergenti e 29 fraternita’ in processo di formazione. La carenza di assistenti spirituali e la GiFra che non e' ben costituita sono i due problemi dell'OFS negli Stati Uniti. Per risolvere la carenza degli assistenti spirituali, li assistenti nazionali hanno preparato dei corsi di formazione aperti ai secolari professi . Finora gia' una sesantina di secolari professi sono nell'assistenza ed altri 50 sono in formazione speciale.

II Raduno CIOFS (2010) e il Progetto Africa

La seconda riunione della Presidenza CIOFS dell'anno 2010 ebbe luogo in Sicilia, Palermo, in data 15-23 Ottobre 2010. La fraternita' regionale OFS della Sicilia e' fiera di conservare i resti di San Ludovico, re di Francia, co-patrono del Ordine Francescano Secolare, nella basilica di Monreale.

La presidenza CIOFS fu', infatti, invitata dalla fraternita' regionale della Sicilia per la celebrazione del futuro Capitolo Generale dell'OFS del 2014. Ma non potendo acconsentire alla loro richiesta, la Presidenza CIOFS ha volto premiare la Comunita' Regionale della Sicilia con la sua presenza in Sicilia per la seconda riunione CIOFS dell'anno 2010.

In questa riuonione e' stato lanciato il PROGETTO AFRICA. L'obiettivo di tale progetto e', guidare ed animare con una speciale attenzione le fraternita' costituite ed emergenti del continente africano. l'OFS in Africa e' presente in 12 nazione con fraternita' costituite, ed in 17 nazione con fraternita' emergenti, ed in una nazione c'e' solo una semplice presenza di alcuni secolari.

La strategia del Progetto Africa sara' fatta tramite: 1) Raccolta di informazione della presenza dell'OFS in Africa e la sua situazione attuale; 2) Pubblicazione di articoli pertinenti le fraternita' africane nel Sito CIOFS per sensibilizzare la comunita' internazionale; 3) Gemellaggio di fraternita' africane con quelle gia' costituite dell'Europa o delle Americhe, che possono accompagnare e sostenere loro; 4) Raccolta di fondi per implementare tale progetto. 5) Riflessione e studio particolare del "carisma francescano e la cultura africana". La strategia dara' priorita' assoluta alla formazione dei secolari francescani, agli assistenti spirituali, e alla GiFra.

La commissione del progetto Africa sara' composta di tre secolari africani, rappresentanti delle tre lingue parlate in Africa: Inglese, Francese e Porteghese. Un gruppo di lavoro della CIOFS presidenza e il Vice ministro Generale (presidente di tale commissione) seguiranno i lavori.

Capitoli elettivi: Slovacchia e Polonia

Slovacchia: Zelina, 9-12 Settembre Il V capitolo elettivo dell'OFS in Slovacchia ebbe luogo in Zelina; nella scuola tecnica dei Padri Salesiani. Prima dell'elezione si e' celebrato un rito di riconciliazione e poi sono seguite le confessioni. Questa celebrazione ha creato una atmosfera fraterna per l'elezione, che si e' svolto in un clima veramente francescano, dove le disponibilita' dei fratelli e sorelle al servizio non son mancate.

La giovane comunita' dell'OFS slovacca conta 1290 membri divisi in 63 fraternita' locali, e raggruppate in 6 regioni. I secolari francescani della Slovacchia sono assistiti 15 assistenti spirituali: 12 del primo ordine francescano e 3 preti diocesani. La Slovacchia e’ stata evangelizzata dai Santi Cirillo e Metodio nell’ottavo secolo. Oggi 68,9% degli slovacchi si dichiara cattolico di rito romano, il 12,96% ateo, il 6,93% luterano, il 4,1% cattolico di rito greco, il 2,0% calvinista, lo 0,9% ortodosso.

Polonia: Góra Św. Anny, 17-19 Settembre L'ottavo capitolo elettivo dell'OFS della Polonia fu celebrato nel famoso ed importante santuario di Monte Sant'Anna (Slezia). Prima dell'elezione, li assistenti spirituali hanno avuto un incontro con l'assistente Generale per studiare li ammendamenti apportati al nuovo statuto degli assistenti spirituali (2002). L'OFS in Polonia e' composto di quasi 13,000 membri. Quantunque l’OFS della Polonia abbia avuto fino 250,000 membri prima della guerra, oggi, e’ un po' invecchiato e diminuito di numero, perche' non ci sono vocazioni giovani. Cio' sembra dovuto al fatto che tantissimi gruppi giovanili francescani non sono strutturati come la GiFra.

La Chiesa cattolica è presente in Polonia dall'anno 966. Da allora è sempre stata al centro delle vicende religiose, culturali e politiche nel paese. Come in nessun altro paese d'Europa, la Chiesa cattolica in Polonia è al centro della vita sociale: le parrocchie sono centri di aggregazione e di incontro e offrono preziosi servizi di assistenza sociale, educativa e sanitaria. La sobria devozione polacca è fatta di silenzio e meditazione e diviene visibile in occasione di processioni e pellegrinaggi , ostacolati invano dal passato regime comunista.

La Rifondazione dell'OFS in Ungheria 1990-2010

ESTRIGOM, Ungheria In data 12-14 Agosto si è celebrato il ventesimo anno della rifondazione dell'OFS in Ungheria. Per questa celebrazione sono stati invitati fratelli e sorelle secolari da diversi paesi confinanti coll'Ungheria: Austria, Ucraina, Slovacchia, Romania, e Serbia. Prima e dopo il capitolo elettivo ci sono state delle celebrazioni e discorsi commemorativi di questo grande evento.

L'OFS in Ungheria esisteva prima dell'avvento del comunismo nel paese. L'OFS era stato soppresso durante il comunismo, ma tanti secolari francescani hanno scelto di continuare a vivere la loro vocazione clandestinamente, mettendo la loro vita a rischio. Ora l'OFS dell'Ungheria giuridicamente costituito conta 470 membri, con 47 fraternità locali, divisi in 5 regioni. L'assistenza spirituale è seguita dai frati del primo ordine e da altri 8 secolari. Tra i secolari francescani ci sono 3 diaconi permanenti. Anche se l'età media dei membri è di oltre i 50 anni, i secolari dell'Ungheria sono umanamente e accademicamente molto preparati.

La storia della chiesa cattolica in Ungheria inizia nel Dicembre dell'anno 1000, quando venne incoronato il primo re d'Ungheria, Stefano I (1000-10038) che converti il popolo magiaro al cristianesimo. Dopo la sua morte venne canonizzato nel 1083 e da allora e' venerato come Santo Stefano d'Ungheria, fondatore dello Stato Ungherese. Attualmente la Chiesa Cattolica in Ungheria conta 6 milioni di fedeli (= 60% della popolazione).

Seminario di Formazione

ASSISI Dal 22 giugno fino a 2 luglio ho avuto occasione di spolverare la mia scienza del "francescanesimo" che avevo appreso 20 anni fa al Franciscan Institute of St. Bonaventure University (USA). Dopo tanti anni di assenza dalla scuola, siedersi in banco e sentire come gli studi francescani sono evoluti, era una meraviglia. Trovarsi ancora in mezzo a tanti giovanissimi studenti ricercatori per studiare e fraternizzare era una esperienza unica. In questo seminario famosi professori di "storia e spiritualità francescana" venuti da diverse università italiane hanno dato dei corsi (= S. Brufani, L. Pellegrini, G.G. Merlo, C. Frugoni, ecc...). Interessanti erano le lezioni, quali per esempio: "Da Francesco 'Predicatore' a Francesco Predicato" di C. Delcorno, "Le Biografie letterarie di Francesco d'Assisi tra '800 e il '900" di F. Finotti, "Francesco d'Assisi nel Cinema" di A. Tinterri.
Le giornate intere passate nella Biblioteca del Sacro Convento a sfogliare i manoscritti, lo studio in loco delle "legendae pittoriche" di Giotto nella Basilica Superiore, e le visite quasi a tutti i musei d'Assisi rendono questo seminario molto speciale.

Ucraina: un futuro pieno di speranza

KIEV, Ucraina Dopo l’esperienza dell’India ho avuto l’occasione di visitare l’Ucraina. La prima impressione che sia ha in questa immensa e verde nazione e’ che i segni del comunismo non sono ancora del tutto cancellati. In grandi citta’ come Kiev, Zhitomir si vedono grandissimi impianti di fabbriche e industre abbandonati, estesi campi incoltivati. Kiev la piu’ verde citta’ del mondo ha tre grandi e ben conservati monasteri del secolo XII con delle bellissime cupole d’orate. Io e il mio collega Tibor Kauser prima di presidere il Capitolo Ellettivo dell’OFS dell’Ucarina (4-6 Giugno 2010), abbiamo visitato diverse fraternita’ locali e gustato una ospitalita’ davvero francescana. I due assistenti nazionali: Fr. Olexander OFMConv, e Fr, Miroslava OFM dal primo giorno fino all’ultimo sono stati con noi. l’OFS in Ucraina conta 1350 membri. Ecco le fraternita’ visitate: La fraternita di Kiev e’ stata la prima fraternita’ che abbiamo visitato. Una bella fraternita’ carismatica, che ci ha dato l’occasione di condividire con loro la parola di Dio. La fraternita’ locale Zhitomir che gestisce una “mensa dei poveri” ci hanno invitato a pranzo e abbiamo avuto l’onore di gustare la mensa dei poveri. Nella citta di Stary Ostropil c’e’ il centro della “fraternita’ personale” di Fr. Kazmir OFMCap. Una fraternita’ con 15 secolari dedicati alle missioni e alle varie attivita’ sociale e spirituali. Questa vibrante “fraternita’ personale” e’ di straordinaria spiritualita’ che ha delle missioni quasi in tutta l’Ucraina. Il fondatore di questa fraternita’ e’ il carismatico Fr. Kazmir OFMCap, che ci ha accolti fraternamente. La fraternita’ locale di Starokostantinov e’ composta di 37 membri ed e’ impegnata nell’ospitalita’ dei pellegrini che almeno una volta all’anno passano da quella citta’. Divisi in gruppi di preghiera pure sono a disposizione di cristiani che chiedonom le loro preghiere. Tanti membri di tale fraternita’ sono impegnati nelle tantissime attivita’ che la “fraternita’ Personale” di Stary Ostropil. La nostra visita fraterna e pastorale e’ terminata a Khmelnitsky, dove abbiamo celebrato il capitolo elettivo nazionale dell’Ucraina.

Congresso Asia - Oceania

INDIA Il mese di Maggio e’ stato un mese benedetto per la CAS (Conferenza degli Assistenti Spirituali) ed anche per l’OFS, per gli eventi che si sono avuti in India (Kerala): Corso per gli assistenti spirituali dell’India (6-8 Maggio), Il Congresso OFS dell’Asia ed Oceania (9-13 Maggio), i Capitoli Elettivi dell’OFS (13-16 Maggio) e della GiFra (13-14 Maggio) d’India. Nel Congresso OFS dell’Asia ed Oceania ben 8 membri della presidenza vi hanno partecipato. Tra Ministri e Vice-ministri Nazionali, Assistenti Spirituali e gli otto membri della Presidenza CIOFS i partecipanti erano una ottantina. Una dele novita in questo congresso era la partecipazione dei rappresentatni dell’OFS in Cina che vanta di settemila membri. E’ stata una bellissima esperienza fraterna incontrare tanti e fratelli di diverse culture ed aree giografiche (= India, Sirilanka, Malasia, Thailandia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Corea, Filippine, Australia, Nuova Zelanda, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macauo).

Per il corso degli assistenti spirituali dell’India vi hanno partecipato 40 assistenti spirituali. I 4 assistenti spirituali hanno dato delle conferenze e hanno risposte alle domande fatti dagli assistenti spirituali dell’India. Gli assistenti spirituali hanno consegnato alla Ministra una risoluzione che ci ha tanto impegnati. Al Capitolo Elettivo dell’OFS in India vi hanno partecipato la Ministra Generale e il Viceministro Generale ed un Assistente Generale. Nell’elezione regolare che e’ stata fatta con tanta facilita’, non vi erano tanti cambiamenti nel Consiglio Nazionale. L’OFS in India ha gia’ celebrato i cento anni di fondazione. Il pioniere della fondazione dell’OFS in India e’ il servo di Dio Thommachan. Il capitolo elettivo della GiFra era presieduto da: Ana Fruck (Consigliera Generale per la GiFra) e Fra Ivan Matic OFM(Assistente Generale).

Riunione presidenza CIOFS

Carissimi amici, Il mese di Aprile per la Presidenza del CIOFS è sempre un tempo forte, perche in questo mese c’è la prima riunione annuale (quella seconda è sempre nei mesi di Ottobre o novembre). Perciò il mese trascorso è stato un mese di impegno, ma specialmente la settimana della riunione, che è quasi sempre al nostro Collegio Internazionale San Lorenzo da Brindisi (Roma), è una squisita esperienza di fraternità internazionale. Tra i lavori che sempre aumentano, perche la fraternità internazionale dell’OFS è sempre in crescita, l’esperienza di fraternità è sempre intensa. Nella presidenza CIOFS la comunità mondiale è ben rappresentata: Uno dall’Africa (= Eritrea), una dall’Asia (Filippine), tre dal Latina America (Brasile, Venezuela, Argentina), due dal Nord America (Messico e Canada), e otto dall’Europa (Italia, Spagna, Austria, Ungheria, Croazia). In questa nostra prima riunione annuale la presidenza ha discusso ed ha approvato decisioni. La nostra prossima riunione sarà il 16-23 Ottobre 2010 in Sicilia.

Eccomi, sono nuovo assistene

ROMA Pace e Bene a tutti. Sono gia' sei mesi che mi tovo qui a Roma, come assistente generale dell'OFS. Sono arrivato a Roma il 11 del mese di Ottobre dell'anno scorso. Vengo dall'Eritrea. Sono piu' di 25 anni che ho prefessato la vita francescano-cappuccina. In questo mio primo intervento nel blog dell'OFS vorrei ringraziare Il Ministro Generale e il suo definitorio per avermi affidato questo ufficio, spero di non deluderli. Ringrazio anche il mio predecessore Fr. Irudaya Samy per il suo servizio svolto con competenza e dedizione. Sara' sempre ricordato da tantissimi terziari e specialmente dalla presidenza CIOFS per il suo lungo servizio ai terziari francescani.
Cerchero' di fare il mio meglio per tenervi aggiornati sulle attivita' dell'OFS a livello mondiale, specialmente della CAS (Consiglio Assistenti Generali) che ogni mese abbiamo la fortuna di radunarci per animarci a vicenda, discutere le nostre attivita' e anche gustare la vita fraterna di tante comunita' francescane del OFM, OFMConv, OFMCap e TOR. Ho gia' partecipato ad un incontro della presidenza CIOFS l'anno scorso. Il nostro primo incontro dell'anno 2010 sara' la prossima settimana, percio' al prossimo mese vi assicuro che verro' con piu' materiale da comunicarvi. BUONE FESTE PASQUALI !

Dear Brothes and sisters. With great joy and happiness, I thank the Lord for what he has done during my 7 years of service to the Brothers and sisters of SFO around the world. It was wonderful and rich experience for me to work with previous Presidency as well as the new presidency. I thank you with my whole heart for your love and encouragement. I enjoyed my work of spiritual animation of SFO and it has increased my faith. I could meet many people, culture, fraternal life in the fraternities of SFO and many first order friars.. These profound experiences entered into my memory, heart and mind. I thank with my heart our dear sister Encarnacion and you my dear sisters and brothers of Presidency for your love support and acceptance of what I am. I am very grateful to you. I could experience among you a great fraternal life and joy. It is my pleasure to thank our dear brothers Valentin, Michael Higgins, Ivan, Martin and Amando for their understanding, love and support. We could work together always in unity. We shared our views, discussed our opinions, and ate together and given witness that first order could work together in harmony and love. "We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty"

Scripture: Luke 17:7-10
Perhaps we are like the laborer in Jesus' parable who expected special favor and reward for going the extra mile? How unfair for the master to compel his servant to give more than what was expected! Don't we love to assert our rights: "I will give only what is required and no more!" But who can satisfy the claims of love? Jesus used this parable of the dutiful servant to explain that we can never put God in our debt or make the claim that God owes us something. We must regard ourselves as God's servants, just as Jesus came "not to be served, but to serve" (Matthew 20:28). Service of God and of neighbor is both a voluntary or free act and a sacred duty. One can volunteer for service or be compelled to do service for one's country or one's family when special needs arise. Likewise, God expects us to give him the worship and praise which is his due. And he gladly accepts the free-will offering of our lives to him and to his service. What makes our offering pleasing to God is the love we express in the gift of self-giving. True love is sacrificial, generous, and selfless.

"Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up"

Scripture: John 2:13-22 [alternate reading: Luke 17:1-6]
Jesus referred to the temple as his Father’s house which was being made into “house of trade” (John 2:16) or “den of robbers” (Mark 11:17). That is why he used physical force to expel the money-chargers. The prophecy of Malachi foretold the coming of the Lord unexpectedly to his Temple to “purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, till they present right offerings to the Lord” (Malachi 3:1-4). Jesus' disciples recalled the words of Psalm 69: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” This was understood as a Messianic prophecy. Here the disciples saw more clearly Jesus as the Messiah who burned with zeal for God's house. The Jewish authorities, however, wanted proof that Jesus had divine authority to act as he did. They demanded a sign from God to prove Jesus right, otherwise, they would treat him as an imposter and a usurper of their authority. Jesus replied that the sign God would give would be Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection from the tomb: "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." The Jews did not understand that the temple Jesus referred to was his own body. The “tent of his body” had to be destroyed to open the way to the presence of God for us. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus not only reconciles us with God, but he fills us with his Holy Spirit and makes us temples of the living God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). VILLA BARTOLOMEA is small village in Italy. The Franciscan sisters of Bon Soccorso from India are working in the Home for aged. Nearly 100 old people are there and the sisters are doing great service to them. There are three sisters who are rendering their service to those old people. Scripture: Mark 12:38-44
Jesus taught his disciples a dramatic lesson in giving with love. Love doesn't calculate; it spends lavishly! Jesus drove this point home to his disciples while sitting in the temple and observing people offering their tithes. Jesus praised a poor widow who gave the smallest of coins in contrast with the rich who gave greater sums. How can someone in poverty give more than someone who has ample means? Jesus' answer is very simple: love is more precious than gold! Jesus taught that real giving must come from the heart. A gift that is given with a grudge or for display loses most of its value. But a gift given out of love, with a spirit of generosity and sacrifice, is invaluable. The amount or size of the gift doesn't matter as much as the cost to the giver. The poor widow could have kept one of her coins, but instead she recklessly gave away all she had! Jesus praised someone who gave barely a penny – how insignificant a sum – because it was everything she had, her whole living. What we have to offer may look very small and not worth much, but if we put all we have at the Lord's disposal, no matter how insignificant it may seem, then God can do with it and with us what is beyond our reckoning.

Scripture: Luke 15:1-10
The scribes and Pharisees took great offense at Jesus because he went out of his way to meet with sinners and he treated them graciously like they were his friends. The Pharisees had strict regulations about how they were to keep away from sinners, lest they incur ritual defilement. They were not to entrust money to them or have any business dealings with them, nor trust them with a secret, nor entrust orphans to their care, nor accompany them on a journey, nor give their daughter in marriage to any of their sons, nor invite them as guests or be their guests. They were shocked with the way in which Jesus freely received sinners and ate with them. Sinners, nonetheless, were drawn to Jesus to hear him speak about the mercy of God. Jesus characteristically answered the Pharisees' charge with a parable or lesson drawn from everyday life.

"Whoever does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple"

Scripture: Luke 14:25-33
Why does Jesus say we must 'hate' our families and even ourselves? The expression 'to hate' often meant to 'prefer less'. Jesus used strong language to make clear that nothing should take precedence or first place in our lives over God. Jesus knew that the way of the cross was the Father's way to glory and victory over sin and death. He counted the cost and said 'yes' to his Father's will. We, too, must 'count the cost' and be ready to follow Jesus in the way of the cross if we want to share in his glory and victory. What is the 'way of the cross' for you and for me? When my will crosses with God's will, then his will must be done. The way of the cross involves sacrifice, the sacrifice of laying down my life each and every day for Jesus' sake. What makes such sacrifice possible and "sweet" for us is the love of God poured out for us in the blood of Jesus Christ. Paul the Apostle reminds us that "God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit" (Romans 5:5). We can never outgive God. He always gives us more than we can expect or imagine.

In the ancient world the most notable sign of favor and intimate friendship was the invitation to "share bread" at the dinner table. Who you ate with showed who you valued and trusted as your friends. A great banquet would involve a lavish meal of several courses and a large company of notable guests and friends. One of the most beautiful images of heaven in the scriptures is the royal wedding celebration and banquet given by the King for his son and close friends. We, in fact, have been invited to the most important banquet of all! The last book in the bible ends with an invitation to the wedding feast of the Lamb and his Bride, the church: The Spirit and the Bride say, Come! (Revelations 22:17). The 'Lamb of God' is the Lord Jesus Christ and his bride is the people he has redeemed by his own precious blood which was shed upon the cross for our salvation.

What about the life to come after our death? God puts in the heart of every living person the desire for unending life and happiness with him. While death claims each of us at the appointed time, God gives us something which death cannot touch – his own divine life and sustaining power. In the Old Testament, one of the greatest testimonies of faith and hope in the midst of great suffering and pain is that of Job: For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another (Job 19:25-27). Jesus made an incredible promise to his disciplies and a claim which only God can make and deliver: Whoever sees and believes in Jesus, the Son of God, shall have everlasting life and be resurrected!

FEAST OF ALL SAINTS

Scripture: Matthew 5:1-12
What is the significance of Jesus' beatitudes, and why are they so central to his teaching? The beatitudes respond to the natural desire for happiness that God has placed in every heart. They teach us the final end to which God calls us, namely the coming of God's kingdom (Matthew 4:17), the vision of God (Matthew 5:8; 1 John 2;1), entering into the joy of the Lord (Matthew 25:21-23) and into his rest (Hebrews 4:7-11). Jesus' beatitudes also confront us with decisive choices concerning the life we pursue here on earth and the use we make of the goods he puts at our disposal. God alone satisfies. Theresa of Avila's prayer book contained a bookmark which she wrote: "Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you; All things pass: God never changes. Patience achieves all it strives for. Whoever has God lacks nothing, God alone suffices." Is God enough for you? God offers us the greatest good possible – abundant life in Jesus Christ (John 10:10) and the promise of unending joy and happiness with God.

Scripture: Luke 14:1, 7-11
What is true humility and why should we make it a characteristic mark of our life and action? True humility is not feeling bad about yourself, or having a low opinion of yourself, or thinking of yourself as inferior to others. True humility frees us from preoccupation with ourselves, whereas a low self-opinion tends to focus our attention on ourselves. Humility is truth in self-understanding and truth in action. Viewing ourselves truthfully, with sober judgment, means seeing ourselves the way God sees us (Psalm 139:1-4). A humble person makes a realistic assessment of himself or herself without illusion or pretense to be something he or she is not. The humble regard themselves neither smaller nor larger than they truly are. True humility frees us to be our true selves and to avoid despair and pride. A humble person does not have to wear a mask or put on a facade in order to look good to others, especially to those who are not really familiar with that person. The humble are not swayed by accidentals, such as fame, reputation, success, or failure.

Scripture: Luke 14:1-6
Jesus already knew that his hosts wanted to catch him in the act of breaking their Sabbath rituals. So when Jesus gave his defense for healing on the Sabbath, they treated him with cold silence. They were ensnared in their own legalism and could not understand or see the purpose of God in allowing a work of healing to take precedence over rest. Why did God give the commandment to keep holy the Sabbath and enjoined his people to refrain from work on that day? The "Sabbath rest" was meant to be a time to remember and celebrate God's goodness and the goodness of his works, both in creation and redemption. It was a day set apart for the praise of God, his work of creation, and his saving actions on our behalf. It was intended to bring everyday work to a halt and to provide needed rest and refreshment. It was not, however, intended to put a stop to love of God and love of neighbor. The law of love supercedes the law of rest! Jesus shows the fallacy of the Pharisees' legalism by pointing to God's intention for the Sabbath: to do good and to heal. God's word has power to heal and to set us free from ignorance, error, intolerance, and prejudice.

Scripture: Luke 13:31-35
Jesus went so far as to call Herod a fox. What did he mean by such an expression? The fox was regarded as the slyest of all animals and one of the most destructive as well. Any farmer will tell you how difficult it is to get rid of foxes who under the cover of night steal and destroy. The fox became a symbol of what was worthless, insignificant, and destructive. It takes great courage to stand up and openly oppose a tyrant. Jesus knew that he would suffer the same fate as the prophets who came before him. He not only willingly exposed himself to such danger, but he prayed for his persecutors and for those who rejected the prophets who spoke in God's name.

When Jesus embarked on his mission he chose twelve men to be his friends and apostles. In the choice of the twelve, we see a characteristic feature of God's work: Jesus chose very ordinary people. They were non-professionals, who had no wealth or position. They were chosen from the common people who did ordinary things, had no special education, and no social advantages. Jesus wanted ordinary people who could take an assignment and do it extraordinarily well. He chose these men, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of becoming under his direction and power. When the Lord calls us to serve, we must not shrug back because we think that we have little or nothing to offer. The Lord takes what ordinary people, like us, can offer and uses it for greatness in his kingdom.

"What God's kingdom is like"

Scripture: Luke 13:18-21
The tiny mustard seed literally grew to be a tree which attracted numerous birds because they loved the little black mustard seed it produced. God's kingdom works in a similar fashion. It starts from the smallest beginnings in the hearts of men and women who are receptive to God's word. And it works unseen and causes a transformation from within. Leaven is another powerful agent of change. A lump of dough left to itself remains just what it is, a lump of dough. But when the leaven is added to it a transformation takes place which produces rich and wholesome bread when heated – the staple of life for humans. The kingdom of God produces a transformation in those who receive the new life which Jesus Christ offers. When we yield to Jesus Christ, our lives are transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Paul the Apostle says, "we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us" (2 Corinthians 4:7).

"I came to cast fire upon the earth"

Scripture: Luke 12:49-53
Jesus shocked his disciples when he declared that he would cast fire and cause division rather than peace upon the earth. What kind of fire did Jesus have in mind here? Fire in biblical times was associated with God and with his action in the world and in the lives of his people. God sometimes manifested his presence by use of fire, such as the burning bush which was not consumed when God spoke to Moses (Exodus 3:2). The image of fire was also used to symbolize God's glory (Ezekiel 1:4, 13), his protective presence (2 Kings 6:17), his holiness (Deut. 4:24), righteous judgment (Zechariah 13:9), and his wrath against sin (Isaiah 66:15-16). It is also used of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 3:11 and Acts 2:3). God's fire both purifies and cleanses, and it inspires a reverent fear of God and of his word in us.

"You must be ready! The Son of man is coming at an unexpected hour"

Scripture: Luke 12:39-௪௮
Jesus ends his teaching on watchfulness and vigilance with another parable about a master and his servants (similr to the parable in Matthew 24:.45-49). The storyline is similar. There is an element of surprise – the master suddenly returns home unexpectedly, probably from a long journey. He rewards the dutiful servant for his faithfulness to his master. He has performed his service with diligence and has done all that the master required of him. The master punishes the other servant who behaved wickedly. This servant was not only irresponsible – he was frequently absent from work and spent his master's money by throwing endless parties with his friends. The wicked servant also abused his fellow workers with physical force and violence – probably to make them do the work he was supposed to do for his master. The master not only strips him of his job and a secure place to live, but removes him from the joy and fellowship of the people he lived and worked with. The wicked servant is cast into a prison of like-minded rebels, trouble-makers, thieves, and murderers. Can you imagine a place of endless quarreling, strife, hatred, envy, jealousy, and constant abuse and fighting? Should we be surprised to see the master acting with such swift judgment? After all the master is only giving back to the wicked servant what he has given to others though his abusive and irresponsible behavior. The master rewards the faithful servant with promotion, honor, and friendship, and he punishes the unfaithful servant – who stole from his master and used his position to abuse others – by removing him from his position of trust. The Lord has entrusted each one of us with his gifts and grace – the grace to love God with faithfulness, trust, and obedience – and the grace to love our neighbor as ourselves.

"Blessed are they who open at once when he knocks"

Scripture: Luke 12:35-38
The Boy Scouts have as their motto, Be Prepared! Jesus' master-servant parables seem to extol the virtue of preparedness. But there is something deeper and even more important behind it. There is an element of surprise in the story of the master returning home at a late hour after attending a marriage feast. Will the master catch his servant sleeping rather than keeping watchful guard? And what about the reward promised for those who faithfully perform their duty, day in and day out, no matter what the circumstances? The image Jesus uses here is a great wedding feast in which the master honors his guests by seating them himself and personally waiting on them. What a great reversal – the master becomes a servant to show his respect and honor for his beloved guests!

"One's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions"

Scripture: Luke 12:13-21
Inheritance disputes are rarely ever easy to resolve, especially when the relatives or close associates of the dead benefactor can't agree on who should get what and who should get the most. Why did Jesus refuse to settle an inheritance dispute between two brothers? He saw that the heart of the issue was not justice or fairness but rather greed and possessiveness. Jesus reinforces his point with a parable about a foolish rich man. Why does Jesus call this wealthy landowner a fool? Jesus does not fault the rich man for his industriousness and skill in acquiring wealth, but rather for his egoism and selfishness – it's mine, all mine, and no one else's. This parable is similar to the parable of the rich man who refused to give any help to the beggar Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). The rich fool had lost the capacity to be concerned for others. His life was consumed with his possessions and his only interests were in himself. His death was the final loss of his soul!

"The Son of man came not to be served but to serve"

Scripture: Mark 10:35-45
Two of Jesus' disciples boldly asked Jesus to promote them to first place in his kingdom. The desire for greatness seems to be inbred in all of us. Who wants to be last or least? Jesus did the unthinkable – he reversed the order to true greatness and glory. If we want to be first and great, then we must place ourselves at the disposal of others by putting their interests first and by taking on their cares and concerns as if they were our own. Jesus wedded authority with unconditional love and service with total sacrifice – the willing sacrifice of one's life for the sake of another. Authority without sacrificial love is brutish and self-serving. Jesus also used stark language to explain what kind of sacrifice he had in mind. His disciples must drink his cup if they expect to reign with him in his kingdom. The cup he had in mind was a bitter one involving crucifixion – laying down one's life even to the point of shedding one's blood for the sake of Christ.

"The Holy Spirit will teach you what you ought to say"

Scripture: Luke 12:8-12
Jesus knows that his disciples will be tested and he assures them that the Holy Spirit will give them what they need in their time of adversity. He warns them, however, that it's possible to reject the grace of God and to fall into apostasy (giving up the faith) out of cowardice or disbelief. The scriptural expression to deny someone means to disown them. Jesus also speaks against blaspheming the Holy Spirit. What is blasphemy and why is it reprehensible? Blasphemy consists in uttering against God, inwardly or outwardly, words of hatred, reproach, or defiance. It's contrary to the respect due God and his holy name. Jesus speaks of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit as the unforgivable sin. Jesus spoke about this sin immediately after the scribes and Pharisees had attributed his miracles to the work of the devil instead of to God.

"Do not fear those who kill the body"

Scripture: Luke 12:1-௭
To the Jews leaven was a sign of evil. It was a piece of dough from left-over bread which fermented. Fermentation was associated with decay and rotting – the state of foul-smelling decomposition. Why did Jesus warn his disciples to avoid the ways of the Pharisees? The Pharisees wanted everyone to recognize that they were pious and good Jews because they meticulously and scrupulously performed their religious duties. Jesus turned the table on them by declaring that outward appearace doesn't always match the inward intentions of the heart. Anyone can display outward signs of goodness while inwardly harboring evil thoughts and intentions. The word hypocrite means actor – someone who pretends to be what he or she is not. But who can truly be good, but God alone? Hypocrisy thrives on making a good appearance and masking what they don't want others to see. The good news is that God's light exposes the darkness of evil and sin in our hearts, even the sin which is unknown to us. And God's light transforms our hearts and minds and enables us to overcome hatred with love, pride with humility, and pretense with integrity and truthfulness. God gives grace to the humble and contrite of heart to enable us to overcome the leaven of insincerity and hypocrisy in our lives.

"You have taken away the key of knowledge"

Scripture: Luke 11:47-54
What does Jesus mean when he says they have taken away the key of knowledge? The religious lawyers and scribes held the "office of the keys" since they were the official interpreters of the scriptures. Unfortunately their interpretation of the scriptures became so distorted and difficult to understand that others were "shut off" to the scriptures. They not only shut themselves to heaven; they also hindered others from understanding God's word. Through pride and envy, they rejected not only the prophets of old, but God's final prophet, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is the "key of David" (see Isaiah 22:22; Revelations 3:7) who opens heaven to those who accept him as Lord and Savior. He is the "Wisdom of God" and source of everlasting life. Only the humble of heart – those who thirst for God and acknowledge his word as true – can truly understand this wisdom. [See Psalm 119:99ff: "I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation."] God is ever ready to speak his word to us and to give us true wisdom and understanding.

"You load men with burdens hard to bear"

Scripture: Luke 11:42-46
The word woe can also be translated as alas. It is as much an expression of sorrowful pity as it is of anger. Why did Jesus lament and issue such a stern rebuke? Jesus was angry with the religious leaders because they failed to listen to God's word and they misled the people they were supposed to guide in the ways of God. The scribes devoted their lives to the study of the Law of Moses and regarded themselves as legal experts in it. They divided the ten commandments and precepts into thousands of tiny rules and regulations. They were so exacting in their interpretations and in trying to live them out, that they had little time for anything else. By the time they finished compiling their interpretations it took no less than fifty volumes to contain them! In their misguided zeal, they required unnecessary and burdensome rules which obscured the more important matters of religion, such as love of God and love of neighbor. They were leading people to Pharisaism rather than to God.

"Give for alms those things which are within"

Scripture: Luke 11:37-41
A Pharisee, after hearing Jesus preach, invited him to dinner, no doubt, because he wanted to hear more from this extraordinary man who spoke the word of God as no one else had done before. It was not unusual for a rabbi to give a teaching over dinner. Jesus, however, did something which offended his host. He did not perform the ceremonial washing of hands before beginning the meal. Did Jesus forget or was he deliberately performing a sign to reveal something to his host? Jesus turned the table on his host by chiding him for uncleanness of heart. Which is more important to God – clean hands or a clean mind and heart? Jesus chided the Pharisees for harboring evil thoughts that make us unclean spiritually – such as greed, pride, bitterness, envy, arrogance, and the like. Why does he urge them, and us, to give alms? When we give freely and generously to those in need we express love, compassion, kindness, and mercy. And if the heart is full of love and compassion, then there is no room for envy, greed, bitterness, and the like.

"This is an evil generation; it seeks a sign"

Scripture: Luke 11:29-32
Many fatalities could be avoided if people took the warning signs seriously. When the religious leaders demanded a sign from Jesus, he gave them a warning to avert spiritual disaster. It was characteristic of the Jews that they demanded "signs" from God's messengers to authenticate their claims. When the religious leaders pressed Jesus to give proof for his claims he says in so many words that he is God's sign and that they need no further evidence from heaven than his own person. The Ninevites recognized God's warning when Jonah spoke to them, and they repented. And the Queen of Sheba recognized God's wisdom in Solomon. Jonah was God's sign and his message was the message of God for the people of Nineveh. Unfortunately the religious leaders were not content to accept the signs right before their eyes. They had rejected the message of John the Baptist and now they reject Jesus as God's Anointed One (Messiah) and they fail to heed his message. Simeon had prophesied at Jesus' birth that he was "destined for the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that inner thoughts of many will be revealed" (Luke 2:34- 35). Jesus confirmed his message with many miracles in preparation for the greatest sign of all – his resurrection on the third day.

"You will have treasure in heaven"

Scripture: Mark 10:17-௩0
A young man who had the best the world could offer – wealth and security came to Jesus because he lacked one thing. He wanted the kind of lasting peace and happiness which money could not buy him. The answer he got, however, was not what he was looking for. He protested that he kept all the commandments; but Jesus spoke to the trouble in his heart. One thing kept him from giving himself whole-heartedly to God. While he lacked nothing in material goods, he was nonetheless possessive of what he had. He placed his hope and security in what he possessed. So when Jesus challenged him to make God his one true possession and treasure, he became dismayed. Why did he go away from Jesus with sadness rather than with joy? His treasure and his hope for happiness were misplaced. Jesus challenged the young man because his heart was possessive. He was afraid to give to others for fear that he would lose what he had gained. He sought happiness and security in what he possessed rather than in who he could love and serve and give himself in undivided devotion.

"Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it"

Scripture: Luke 11:27-28
When an admirer wished to compliment Jesus by praising his mother, Jesus did not deny the truth of the blessing she pronounced. Her beatitude (which means "blessedness" or "happiness") recalls Mary's canticle: All generations will call me blessed (Luke 1:48). Jesus adds to her words by pointing to the source of all true blessedness or happiness – union with God in heart, mind, and will. Mary humbly submitted herself to the miraculous plan of God for the incarnation of his only begotten Son – the Word of God made flesh in her womb, by declaring: I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). Mary heard the word spoken to her by the angel and she believed it. On another occasion Jesus remarked that whoever does the will of God is a friend of God and a member of his family – his sons and daughters who have been ransomed by the precious blood of Christ. (Luke 8:21). They are truly blessed because they know their God personally and they find joy in hearing and obeying his word.

"If it is by the finger of God"

Scripture: Luke 11:15-26
Jesus came to free us from the greatest danger of all – the corrupting force of evil which destroys us from within and makes us slaves to sin and Satan (John 8:34). Evil is not an impersonal force that just happens. It has a name and a face and it seeks to master every heart and soul on the face of the earth (1 Peter 5:8-9). Scripture identifies the Evil One by many names, 'Satan', 'Be-el'zebul – the prince of demons', the 'Devil', the 'Deceiver', the 'Father of Lies', and 'Lucifier', the fallen angel who broke rank with God and established his own army and kingdom in opposition to God. Jesus declared that he came to overthrow the power of Satan and his kingdom (John 12:31). Jesus' numerous exorcisms brought freedom to many who were troubled and oppressed by the work of evil spirits. Jesus himself encountered personal opposition and battle with Satan when he was put to the test in the wilderness just before his public ministry (Matthew 4:1; Luke 4:1). He overcame the Evil One through his obedience to the will of his Father.

"How much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

Jesus used the illustration of a late-night traveller to teach his listeners an important lesson about how God treats us in contrast to the kind of treatment we might expect from good neighbors. The rule of hospitality in biblical times required the cooperation of the entire community in entertaining an unexpected or late-night guest. Whether the guest was hungry or not, a meal would be served. In a small village it would be easy to know who had baked bread that day. Bread was essential for a meal because it served as a utensil for dipping and eating from the common dishes. Asking for bread from one's neighbor was both a common occurrence and an expected favor. To refuse to give bread would bring shame because it was a sign of inhospitality. The Lord is ever ready to give us not only what we need, but more than we can expect. He gives freely of his Holy Spirit that we may share in his life and joy.

The month of October is dedicated to our Lady of the Rosary. Today’s feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary was instituted to honour and to thank Our Lady for the protection the Church experienced through her in the victories of the Christian armies against the Turks at Lepanto on the 7^th October, 1571. The faith that Church expresses through this feast is that Mary is the Protectress of the Church. The Rosary as we know is nothing but faith-contemplation of Christ’s life, death and glorification and of Mary’s intimate association with Jesus. Rosary expresses 3 mysteries: Incarnation, Mary at the Cross, Pentecost. The Rosary is sure means for preserving the home and strengthening family life.

Jesus teaches us to address God as "our Father" and to confidently ask him for the things we need to live as his sons and daughters. We can approach God our Father with confidence and boldness because Jesus Christ has opened the way to heaven for us through his death and resurrection. When we ask God for help, he fortunately does not give us what we deserve. Instead, he responds with grace and mercy. He is kind and forgiving towards us and he expects us to treat our neighbor the same. We can pray with expectant faith because our heavenly Father truly loves each one of us and and he treats us as his beloved children. He delights to give us what is good. His love and grace transforms us and makes us like himself. Through his grace and power we can love and serve one another as Jesus taught – with grace, mercy, and loving-kindness. Do you treat others as they deserve, or do you treat them as the Lord would with grace and mercy? Jesus' prayer includes an injunction that we must ask God to forgive us in proportion as we forgive those who have wronged us. God's grace frees us from every form of anger, spite, resentment, and hatred.

Jesus loved to visit the home of Martha and Mary and enjoyed their gracious hospitality. In this brief encounter we see two very different temperaments in Martha and Mary. Martha loved to serve, but in her anxious manner of waiting on Jesus, she caused unrest. Mary, in her simple and trusting manner, waited on Jesus by sitting attentively at his feet. She instinctively knew that what the Lord and Teacher most wanted at that moment was her attentive presence. Anxiety and preoccupation keep us from listening and from giving the Lord our undivided attention. The Lord bids us to give him our concerns and anxieties because he is trustworthy and able to meet any need we have. His grace frees us from needless concerns and preoccupation.

Many agnostics refuse to believe in God because of this seemingly imponderable problem. If God is love then evil and suffering must be eliminated in all its forms. What is God's answer to this human dilemma? Jesus' parable about a highway robbery gives us a helpful hint. Jesus told this dramatic story in response to a devout Jew who wanted to understand how to apply God's great commandment of love to his everyday life circumstances. In so many words this religious-minded Jew said: "I want to love God as best as I can and I want to love my neighbor as well. But how do I know that I am fulfilling my duty to love my neighbor as myself?" Jesus must have smiled when he heard this man challenge him to explain one's duty towards their neighbor. For the Jewish believer the law of love was plain and simple: "treat your neighbor as you would treat yourself." The real issue for this believer was the correct definition of who is "my neighbor". He understood "neighbor" to mean one's fellow Jew who belonged to the same covenant which God made with the people of Israel. Up to a certain point, Jesus agreed with this sincere expert but, at the same time, he challenged him to see that God's view of neighbor went far beyond his narrow definition.

Scripture: Luke 10:17-24
Jesus thanks the Father in heaven for revealing to his disciples the wisdom and knowledge of God. What does Jesus' prayer tell us about God and about ourselves? First, it tells us that God is both Father and Lord of earth as well as heaven. He is both Creator and Author of all that he has made, the first origin of everything and transcendent authority, and at the same time, goodness and loving care for all his children. All fatherhood and motherhood is derived from him (Ephesians 3:14-15). Jesus' prayer also contains a warning that pride can keep us from the love and knowledge of God. What makes us ignorant and blind to the things of God? Sinful pride springs from exaggerated self-centeredness. It closes the mind to God's truth and wisdom for our lives. The angels fell into pride and were cast out of heaven. The virtue of humility, the only true remedy against false pride, and which is very different from the feelings of inferiority and low self-esteem, leads us to a true recognition of who we are in God and of our dependence on God.

John Chrysostom, a 5th century church father, compared the guardian angels to the troops garrisoned in cities on the frontiers of the empire to defend it from the enemy. Basil the Great said, "Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life." Angels ministered to Jesus after his temptation in the wilderness and during his agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. The angels will be present at Christ's return, which they will announce, to serve at his judgment (Matt. 25:31). The angels tell us that this universe is not just materialistic. The fallen angels, led by Satan, seek our destruction. If they cannot induce us to disown our faith and allegiance to Christ, they attempt to divert us from doing the will of God by distracting us with good things that weigh us down and make us indifferent towards the things of God. God gives us the help of his angelic hosts and he gives us spiritual weapons, the shield of faith and the breastplate of righteousness (see Ephesians 6:1-11), to resist the devil and his lies. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we, too, join with angelic choirs in singing the praises of God.

When Jesus commissioned seventy of his disciples to go on mission, he gave them a vision of a great harvest for the kingdom of God. Jesus frequently used the image of a harvest to convey the coming of God’s reign on earth. The harvest is the fruition of labor and growth – beginning with the sowing of seeds, then growth, and finally fruit for the harvest. In like manner, the word of God is sown in the hearts of receptive men and women who hear his word and who accept it with trust and obedience. The harvest Jesus had in mind was not only the people of Israel, but all the peoples (or nations) of the world. John the Evangelist tells us that "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). What does Jesus mean when he says his disciples must be "lambs in the midst of wolves"? The prophet Isaiah foretold a time when wolves and lambs will dwell in peace (Isaiah 11:6 and 65:25). This certainly refers to the second coming of Christ when all will be united under the Lordship of Jesus after he has put down his enemies and established the reign of God over the heavens and the earth. In the meantime, the disciples must expect opposition and persecution from those who who would oppose the gospel. Jesus came as our sacrificial lamb to atone for the sin of the world. We, in turn, must be willing to sacrifice our lives in humble service of our Lord and Master.

"No one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God"

Scripture: Luke 9:57-62
With the call the Lord gives the grace to respond and the strength to follow all the way to the end. Why does Jesus issue a challenge with the call? Jesus was utterly honest in telling people what it would cost to follow him. When a would-be disciple approached Jesus and said he was ready to follow, Jesus told him it would require sacrifice – the sacrifice of certain creaturely comforts. Jesus appealed to this man's heart and told him to detach himself from whatever might hold him back. Spiritual detachment is a necessary step for following the Lord. It frees us to give ourselves without reserve to the Lord and his service. While many of us may not need to give up the comfort of our own home and bed to follow Jesus, we, nonetheless, must be willing to part with anything that might stand in the way of doing God's will. Another would-be disciple said he would follow as soon as he had buried his father. What he meant by this expression was that he felt the need to return to his home to take care of his father through old age until he died. The third had no obligation to return home, but simply wanted to go back and say good-bye. Jesus surprised these would-be disciples with the stark truth that nothing should hinder us from following the Lord. Was Jesus being harsh and rude to his would-be followers? Not really. We are free to decide whether we will take the path which Jesus offers. But if we choose to go, then the Lord wants us to count the cost and choose for it freely.

"You will see heaven opened and the angels of God"

What does Jesus mean when he says "you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man"? One of the most remarkable revelations recorded in the bible is the dream of Jacob (Genesis 28:12-17). God had opened a door for Jacob that brought him and his people into a new relationship with the living God. In Jacob's dream God revealed his angelic host and showed him the throne of heaven and promised Jacob that he and descendants would dwell with the living God. Who are the angels and why do they intervene between heaven and earth? The scriptures tell us the angels are God's servants and messengers. "They are the mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word" (Psalm 103:20). The angels belong to Christ and were created for and through him (Colossians 1:16). The Letter to the Hebrews speaks of the role of the angels in God's plan of salvation: "Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?" (Hebrews 1:14) The angels are not only messengers but protectors and guardians as well. “For he will give his angels charge of you to guard you in all yours ways” (Psalm 91:11). We are not alone in our struggle against sin and evil in the world. The armies of heaven fight for us and with us in the spiritual battle for our hearts, minds, and wills

Scripture: Luke 9:46-50
The appetite for glory and greatness seems to be inbred in us. Who doesn't cherish the ambition to be "somebody" whom others admire rather than a "nobody"? Even the psalms speak about the glory God has destined for us. "You have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor" (Psalm 8:5). Jesus made a dramatic gesture by placing a child next to himself to show his disciples who really is the greatest in the kingdom of God. What can a little child possibly teach us about greatness? Children in the ancient world had no rights, position, or privileges of their own. They were socially at the "bottom of the rung" and at the service of their parents, much like the household staff and domestic servants. What is the significance of Jesus' gesture? Jesus elevated a little child in the presence of his disciples by placing the child in a privileged position of honor at his right side. It is customary, even today, to seat the guest of honor at the right side of the host. Who is the greatest in God's kingdom? The one who is humble and lowly of heart – who instead of asserting their rights willingly empty themselves of pride and self-seeking glory by taking the lowly position of a servant or child.

"Because you bear the name of Christ"

Scripture: Mark 9:38-48
They were upset that someone who was not of the same company of disciples as themselves was casting out a demon in the name of Jesus. They even "forbade" the man "because he was not following us". Jesus' reply is filled with wisdom: "No one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me." Are we not like the disciples when we get upset at the good others do because of jealousy or fear? Paul says that "love is not jealous... but rejoices in the right" (1 Corinthians 13:4,6). Envy and jealousy, its counterpart, are sinful because they lead us to sorrow over what should make us rejoice – namely, our neighbor's good. The reason we may grieve over our another's good is that somehow we see that good as lessening our own value or excellence. Envy forms when we believe that the other person's advantage or possession diminishes or brings disgrace on us. Envy is contrary to love. Both the object of love and the object of envy is our neighbor's good, but by contrary movements, since love rejoices in our neighbor's good, while envy grieves over it. How can we overcome envy? With the love that God puts into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). This love seeks the highest good of our neighbor. Paul the Apostle says that "love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right (1 Corinthians 13:5-6). Ask the Lord to fill you with the fire of his purifying love that you may rejoice in the good of others even in those who cross you or cause you difficulty.

"They were astonished at the majesty of God"

When we ascribe majesty to someone or something, we acknowledge greatness in that person or thing, and voice our respect for it. The miracles of Jesus revealed the majesty of God and displayed his grace and favor, especially towards the lowly and humble of heart. But with the miracles Jesus also gave a prophetic warning: There can be no share in God's glory without the cross. Jesus prophesied his own betrayal and crucifixion. But it did not make any sense to the disciples because it did not fit their understanding of the Messiah who was supposed to come and free his people from tyranny and oppression. Little did they know that the way to victory over sin and death would be through the cross and resurrection of Christ.

"As Jesus was praying alone the disciples were with him"

Who is Jesus for you? Many in Israel recognized Jesus as a mighty man of God, even comparing him with the greatest of the prophets. Peter, always quick to respond whenever Jesus spoke, professed that Jesus was truly the Christ of God. No mortal being could have revealed this to Peter, but only God. Through the eyes of faith Peter grasped who Jesus truly was. He was the first apostle to publicly recognize Jesus as the Anointed One whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world as Lord and Savior (Luke 2:11, Acts 2:36). Christ is the Greek word for Messiah, the Hebrew word which is also translated as the Anointed One.

"Who is this about whom I hear such things?"

Who do you most admire? People with power, influence, fame or wealth? Scripture warns us of such danger (see Proverbs 23:1-2). King Herod had respected and feared John the Baptist as a great prophet and servant of God. John, however did not fear to rebuke Herod for his adulterous affair with his brother's wife. Herod, however, was more of a people pleaser than a God pleaser. Herod not only imprisoned John to silence him, but he also beheaded him simply to please his family and friends. Now when reports of Jesus' miracles and teaching reach Herod's court, Herod becomes very troubled in conscience. He thinks that John the Baptist has risen from the dead! Herod sought to meet Jesus more out of curiosity and fear than out of a sincere desire to know God's wisdom and truth. God's grace frees us from the tyranny of fear and the pressure to please others rather than to please.

"Jesus gave them power and authority over all demons and diseases"

God's word has power to change and transform our lives. Jesus gave his apostles both power and authority to speak and to act in his name – to cast out evil spirits, to heal, and to speak the word of God. When Jesus spoke of power and authority he did something unheard of. He wedded power and authority with love and humility. The world and the flesh seek power for selfish gain. Jesus teaches us to use it for the good of our neighbor. Why does Jesus tell the apostles to travel light with little or no provision? Poverty of spirit frees us from greed and preoccupation with possessions and makes ample room for God's provision. The Lord wants his disciples to be dependent on him and not on themselves. He wills to work in and through each of us for his glory.

"Standing by the cross of Jesus"

Scripture: John 19:25-27 (alternate reading: Luke 7:11-17)
The cross brings us face to face with Jesus' suffering. He was alone. All his disciples had deserted him except for his mother and three women along with John, the beloved disciple. The apostles had fled in fear. But Mary, the mother of Jesus and three other women who loved him were present at the cross. They demonstrate the power of love for overcoming fear (1 John 4:18). At the beginning of Jesus' birth, when he was presented in the temple, Simeon had predicted that Mary would suffer greatly – a sword will pierce through your own soul (see Luke 2:33-35). Many have called Mary a martyr in spirit. Bernard of Clairvaux said: Jesus "died in body through a love greater than anyone had known. She died in spirit through a love unlike any other since his." Mary did not despair in her sorrow and loss, since her faith and hope were sustained by her trust in God and the love she had for her Son. Jesus, in his grief and suffering, did not forget his mother. He entrusted her care to John, as well as John to her. No loss, no suffering can keep us from the love of Christ (Romans 8:35-39). Paul the Apostle says that love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1 Corinthians 13:3). We can find no greater proof of God's love for us than the willing sacrifice of his Son on the cross.

Jesus explained to Nicodemus the necessity of his impending crucifixion and resurrection by analogy with Moses and the bronze serpent in the desert.When the people of Israel were afflicted with serpents in the wilderness because of their rebellion and sin, God instructed Moses: "Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and every one who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live" (Numbers 21:8). The bronze serpent points to the cross of Christ which defeats sin and death and obtains everlasting life for those who believe in Jesus and in his victory on the cross. The result of Jesus "being lifted up on the cross" and his rising and exaltation to the Father's right hand in heaven, is our "new birth in the Spirit" and adoption as sons and daughters of God. God not only redeems us, but he fills us with his own divine life and power that we might share in his glory.

"But who do you say that I am?"

At an opportune time Jesus tests his disciples with a crucial question: Who do men say that I am and who do you say that I am? He was widely recognized in Israel as a mighty man of God, even being compared with the greatest of the prophets, John the Baptist, Elijah, and Jeremiah. Peter, always quick to respond, professes that Jesus is truly the Christ. No mortal being could have revealed this to Peter; but only God.Through faith Peter grasped who Jesus truly was. Scripture: Luke 6:43-49
The fig tree was the favorite of all trees for the people of Palestine. It symbolized fertility, peace, and prosperity. Grapes, likewise, produced wine, the symbol of joy. Thorns and brambles were only good for burning as fuel for the fire. There's a proverbial saying that you know a tree by its fruit. Likewise a person will produce good or bad fruit depending on what is sown in the heart. Charles Read said: "Sow an act and you reap a habit. Sow a habit and you reap a character. Sow a character and you reap a destiny." Character, like fruit, doesn't grow overnight. It takes a lifetime. Jesus connects soundness with good fruit. Something is sound when it is free from defect, decay, or disease and is healthy. Good fruit is the result of sound living – living according to moral truth and upright character. The prophet Isaiah warned against the dangers of falsehood: Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness (Isaiah 5:20). The fruits of falsehood produce an easy religion which takes the iron out of religion, the cross out of Christianity, and any teaching which eliminates the hard sayings of Jesus, and which push the judgments of God into the background and makes us think lightly of sin. How do we avoid falsehood and bad fruit? By being true – true to God, his word, and his grace. And that takes character! Those who are true to God know that their strength lies not in themselves but in God who supplies the grace we need to live as his disciples. The fruit of a disciple is marked by faith, hope and love, justice, prudence, fortitude and temperance.

"Do you not see the log that is in your own eye?"

Scripture: Luke 6:39-42
Why is judgmentalism and a critical spirit so rampant today, even among Christians? "Thinking the best of other people" is necessary if we wish to grow in love. And kindliness in judgment is nothing less that a sacred duty. The Rabbis warned people: "He who judges his neighbor favorably will be judged favorably by God." How easy it is to misjudge and how difficult it is to be impartial in judgment. Our judgment of others is usually "off the mark" because we can't see inside the person, or we don't have access to all the facts, or we are swayed by instinct and unreasoning reactions to people. It is easier to find fault in others than in oneself. Jesus states a heavenly principle we can stake our lives on: what you give to others (and how you treat others) will return to you. The Lord knows our faults and he sees all, even the imperfections and sins of the heart which we cannot recognize in ourselves. Like a gentle father and a skillful doctor he patiently draws us to his seat of mercy and removes the cancer of sin which inhabits our hearts.

"Do good to those who hate you, pray for those who abuse you"

What makes Christians different and what makes Christianity distinct from any other religion? It is grace – treating others, not as they deserve, but as God wishes them to be treated – with loving-kindness and mercy. God is good to the unjust as well as the just. His love embraces saint and sinner alike. God seeks our highest good and teaches us to seek the greatest good of others, even those who hate and abuse us. Our love for others, even those who are ungrateful and selfish towards us, must be marked by the same kindness and mercy which God has shown to us. It is easier to show kindness and mercy when we can expect to benefit from doing so. How much harder when we can expect nothing in return. Augustine of Hippo describes Jesus double precept to give and forgive as two essential wings of prayer.

"Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh"

Scripture: Luke 6:20-26
When you encounter misfortune, grief, or tragic loss, how do you respond? With fear or faith? With passive resignation or with patient hope and trust in God? We know from experience that no one can escape all of the inevitable trials of life – pain, suffering, sickness, and death. When Jesus began to teach his disciples he gave them a "way of happiness" that transcends every difficulty and trouble that can weigh us down with grief and despair. Jesus began his sermon on the mount by addressing the issue of where true happiness can be found. The word beatitude literally means happiness or blessedness. Jesus' way of happiness, however, demands a transformation from within – a conversion of heart and mind which can only come about through the gift and working of the Holy Spirit. How can one possibly find happiness in poverty, hunger, mourning, and persecution? If we want to be filled with the joy and happiness of heaven, then we must empty ourselves of all that would shut God out of our hearts. Poverty of spirit finds ample room and joy in possessing God alone as the greatest treasure possible. Hunger of the spirit seeks nourishment and strength in God's word and Spirit. Sorrow and mourning over wasted life and sin leads to joyful freedom from the burden of guilt and oppression. God reveals to the humble of heart the true source of abundant life and happiness. Jesus promises his disciples that the joys of heaven will more than compensate for the troubles and hardships they can expect in this world.

"She will bear a son, and you shall call him Jesus"

What is the significance of Matthew's genealogy? His genealogy is arranged in three sections portraying three great stages in the spiritual history of the people of the old covenant. The first stage begins with Abraham, the father of the chosen people, and ends with David, God's anointed King. The second stage takes us to the exile of God's people in Babylon. This is the period of Israel's shame and disaster due to her unfaithfulness. The third stage takes us to Jesus, God's anointed Messiah. Jesus the Messiah is the direct descent of Abraham and David, and the rightful heir to David's throne. God in his mercy fulfilled his promises to Abraham and to David that he would send a Savior and a King to rule over the house of Israel and to deliver them from their enemies. Jesus is the fulfillment of all God's promises. He is the hope not only for the people of the Old Covenant but for all nations as well. He is the Savior of the world. In him we receive adoption into a royal priesthood and holy nation as sons and daughters of the living God

"Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?"

What is God's intention for the commandment, keep holy the Sabbath (Exodus 20:8; Deut. 5:12)? The scribes and Pharisees wanted to catch Jesus in the act of breaking the Sabbath ritual so they might accuse him of breaking God's law. In a few penetrating words Luke records that Jesus knew their thoughts. They were filled with fury and contempt for Jesus because they put their own thoughts of right and wrong above God. They were ensnared in their own legalism because they did not understand or see the purpose of God. Jesus shows their fallacy by pointing to God's intention for the Sabbath: to do good and to save life rather than to do evil or to destroy life.

Scripture: Mark 7:31-37
Whatever Jesus did, he did well. He demonstrated both the beauty and goodness of God in his actions. When Jesus heals a man who is both deaf and a stutterer he shows his considerateness for this man's predicament. Jesus takes him aside privately, not doubt to remove him from embarrassment with a noisy crowd of gawkers. He puts his fingers into his ears and he touches his tongue with his own spittle to physically identify with this man's infirmity and to awaken faith in him. With a word of command the poor man's ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. The people's response to this miracle testifies to Jesus' great care for others: He has done all things well.

Scripture: Luke 6:1-5
The "Sabbath rest" was meant to be a time to remember and celebrate God's goodness and the goodness of his work, both in creation and redemption. It was a day set apart for the praise of God, his work of creation, and his saving actions on our behalf. It was intended to bring everyday work to a halt and to provide needed rest and refreshment. Jesus' disciples are scolded by the scribes and Pharisees, not for plucking and eating corn from the fields, but for doing so on the Sabbath. In defending his disciples, Jesus argues from the scriptures that human need has precedence over ritual custom. In their hunger, David and his men ate of the holy bread offered in the Temple (1 Samuel 21:2-7). On every Sabbath morning twelves loaves were laid before God on a golden table in the Holy Place. Each loaf represented one of the twelve tribes of Israel. No one was allowed to eat this bread except the priests because it represented the very presence of God. David understood that human need took precedence over rules and ritual regulations.

Scripture: Luke 5:33-39
Jesus goes on to warn his disciples about the problem of the "closed mind" that refuses to learn new things. Jesus used an image familiar to his audience – new and old wineskins. In Jesus' times, wine was stored in wineskins, not bottles. New wine poured into skins was still fermenting. The gases exerted gave pressure. New wine skins were elastic enough to take the pressure, but old wine skins easily burst because they were hard. What did Jesus mean by this comparison? Are we to reject the old in place of the new? Just as there is a right place and a right time for fasting and for feasting, so there is a right place for the old as well as the new. Jesus says the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old (Matthew 13:52). How impoverished we would be if we only had the Old Testament or the New Testament, rather than both. The Lord gives us wisdom so we can make the best use of both the old and the new. He doesn't want us to hold rigidly to the past and to be resistant to the new work of his Holy Spirit in our lives. He wants our minds and hearts to be like the new wine skins – open and ready to receive the new wine of the Holy Spirit.

"Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men"

Scripture: Luke 5:1-11
This incident tells us an important truth about how God works in and through each of us for his glory. God expects of us greater things than we can do by ourselves. When we cooperate in his works, we accomplish far beyond what we can do on our own. Therese of Lisieux, A Carmelite nun who died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-four, wrote to a friend: "..Jesus has so incomprehensible a love for us that he wills that we have a share with him in the salvation of souls. He wills to do nothing without us. The Creator of the universe awaits the prayer of a poor little soul to save other souls redeemed like it at the price of all his Blood." When God's word is spoken his kingdom is revealed and his power is released. When people respond to God's word with faith and obedience they are changed and made "a new creation" in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Scripture: Matthew 19:23-30
Was Jesus really against wealth? And why does he issue such a strong warning to the rich (as well as to the rest of us who desire to be rich)? We know that Jesus was not opposed to wealth per se, nor was he opposed to the wealthy. He had many friends who were well-to-do, including some notorious tax collectors! One even became an apostle! Jesus' warning reiterated the wisdom of the Old Testament: "Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is perverse in his ways" (Proverbs 28:6; see also Psalm 37:16). "Do not wear yourself out to get rich; be wise enough to desist" (Proverbs 23:4). Jesus seems to say that it is nearly impossible for the rich to live as citizens of God's kingdom. The camel was regarded as the largest animal in Palestine. The "eye of the needle" could be interpreted quite literally or it could figuratively describe the narrow and low gate of the city walls which was used by travellers when the larger public gate was locked after dark. A normal sized man had to "lower" himself to enter that gate. A camel would literally have to kneel and crawl through it.

"Sell what you possess and you will have treasure in heaven"

Scripture: Matthew 19:16-22

Why did he go away from Jesus with sadness rather than with joy? His treasure and his hope for happiness were misplaced. Treasure has a special connection to the heart, the place of desire and longing, the place of will and focus. The thing we most set our heart on is our highest treasure. The Lord himself is the greatest treasure we can possibly have. Giving up everything else to have the Lord as our treasure is not sorrowful, but the greatest joy. See Jesus' parable about the treasure hidden in a field (Matthew 13:44). Selling all that we have could mean many different things – our job, our style of life, what we do with our free time. Jesus challenged the young man because his heart was possessive. He was afraid to give to others for fear that he would lose what he had gained. Those who are generous towards God and others find that they cannot outmatch God in generosity. God blesses us with innumerable spiritual goods – such as longlasting peace, unspeakable joy, enduring love, abiding relationships and friendship that does not fade or fail – that far outweigh the fleeting joys of material possessions which fail to sastify us beyond the present moment. God alone can satisfy the deepest longing and desires of our heart.

"He who eats this bread will live forever"

Scripture: John 6:51-58
The Jews were scandalized and the disciples were divided when Jesus said "unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no life in you." What a hard saying, unless you understand who Jesus is and why he calls himself the bread of life. The miracle of the multiplication of the loaves (John 6:1-15), when Jesus said the blessing, broke and distributed the loaves through his disciples to feed the multitude, prefigured the superabundance of the unique bread of the Eucharist, or Lord’s Supper. The Gospel of John has no account of the Last Supper meal (just the foot washing ceremony and Jesus' farewell discourse). Instead, John quotes extensively from Jesus' teaching on the bread of life.

Scripture: Luke 1:39-56 (alternate reading: Matthew 19:13-15)
What enabled Mary to grow in faith and to persevere in hope in the face of obstacles and trials? The Gospel of Luke reveals the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in Mary's life. When Elizabeth and Mary greeted one another they were filled with the Holy Spirit and with a joyful anticipation of the fulfillment of God's promise to give a Savior. John the Baptist, even before the birth of the Messiah, pointed to his coming and leapt for joy in the womb of his mother as the Holy Spirit revealed to him the presence of the King to be born. The Holy Spirit is God's gift to us to enable us to know and experience the indwelling presence of God and the power of his kingdom. The Holy Spirit is the way in which God reigns within each of us. Mary accepted her mission with uncompromising faith and obedience. She acted with unwavering trust and faith because she believed that God would fulfill the word he had spoken. Her great hymn of praise echoes the song of Hannah (see 1 Samuel 2:1-10) and proclaims the favor of the Lord: God exalts the lowly and he fills the hungry. The Holy Spirit is ever ready to renew your faith and hope in God's promises and to make you strong in love for God and your neighbor.

Scripture: Matthew 19:3-12 (alternate reading: Luke 1:39-56)
Jesus deals with the issue of divorce by taking his hearers back to the beginning of creation and to God's plan for the human race. In Genesis 2:23-24 we see God's intention and ideal that two people who marry should become so indissolubly one that they are one flesh. That ideal is found in the unbreakable union of Adam and Eve. They were created for each other and for no one else. They are the pattern and symbol for all who were to come. Jesus explains that Moses permitted divorce as a concession in view of a lost ideal. Jesus sets the high ideal of the married state before those who are willing to accept his commands. Jesus, likewise sets the high ideal for those who freely renounce marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Both marriage and the single life are calls from God to live a consecrated life, that is to live as married couples or as singles who belong not to themselves but to God. Our lives are not our own, but they belong to God. He gives the grace and power to those who seek to follow in his way of holiness in their state of life.

"Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him?"

Scripture: Matthew 18:21-19:1
The contrast could not have been greater! No offence our neighbor can do to us can compare with our debt to God! We have been forgiven a debt which is beyond all paying; to ransom our debt of sin God gave up his only begotten Son. Paul the Apostle states, "you were bought with a price" (1 Corinthians 7:23 ) and that price was Jesus' death on the cross. Through the shedding of his blood on the cross, Jesus not only brought forgiveness and pardon for our offenses, but release from captivity – from bondage and slavery to sin. Christ came to redeem us from a sinful way of life. "You were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your fathers ...with the precious blood of Christ" (1 Peter 1:18). Christ "gave himself to redeem us from all iniquity" (Titus 2:14). Iniquity describes the futile ways of wrongdoing or sin. We have been forgiven an enormous debt which we could never possibly repay. God expects us to treat one another the same way he treats us. If God has forgiven each of us our debt, which was very great, we, too must forgive others whatever debt they owe us.

"If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault"

Scripture: Matthew 18:15-20
If you feel you have been wronged by someone, Jesus says the first step is to speak directly but privately to the individual who has done the harm. One of the worst things we can do is brood over our grievance. This can poison the mind and heart and make it more difficult to go directly to the person who caused the damage. If we truly want to settle a difference with someone, we need to do it face to face. If this fails in its purpose, then the second step is to bring another person or persons, someone who is wise and gracious rather than someone who is hot-tempered or judgmental. The goal is not so much to put the offender on trial, but to persuade the offender to see the wrong and to be reconciled. And if this fails, then we must still not give up, but seek the help of the Christian community. Note the emphasis here is on restoring a broken relationship by seeking the help of other Christians who hopefully will pray and seek a solution for reconciliation based on Christian love and wisdom, rather than relying on coercive force or threat of legal action, such as a lawsuit.
